I contacted the Allegheny County Health Department in an attempt to find information about dog bites. They were SO HELPFUL. I am so grateful. 1) An ER is required by law to report dog bites to the county health department. If they do so, the health department will typically follow up with the bite victim. (This did NOT happen in our case. Take note, if you go to West Penn ER for an animal bite; ACHD is following up with ER on this lapse.) 2) If you cannot locate the animal that bit you, CDC (and therefore ACHD) guidance is to administer PEP. While there is slim to zero chance a domestic animal has rabies, rabies is 99.9% fatal in humans if left untreated. If you cannot locate the animal, PEP is indicated. The End. I appreciate this listserv and our lovely neighbors.
