Neighbors, As we are all undoubtedly aware, the future of full-time, in-person schooling is looking ever more bleak and uncertain. I have read about families in other cities/states coming together to form their own “neighborhood schools” in the increasingly likely event that schools remain closed. This would involve a small group of like-minded parents with similarly-aged children, similar levels of risk tolerance, and similar ideologies (i.e., disillusionment with the concept of distance learning for elementary school kids; recognition that many kids really need daily social interaction with other children) who collectively pool their resources to hire a teacher to effectively run a little school out of one of their homes (or rotating amongst their homes). The kids would be physically together and would and play and learn together. This is similar to homeschool groups/co-ops that have existed for years within the homeschool community; the difference would be the hiring of a professional educator, because we did not make the choice to homeschool and many families do not have the ability to effectively do so. Is anyone thinking of doing this? If so I would love to hear your thoughts. But unless you are thinking about this or you know someone who is, or you have other helpful or relevant information, please don’t reply to me and please don’t start a public back and forth on this forum. I’m not interested in anyone’s opinions about the necessity of school closures, lockdowns, social distancing, whatever. I just want the best education possible for my daughter under the circumstances. That’s why I’m posting this here and not on NextDoor. Clearly school reopenings have become the next great unnecessarily political pandemic debate, but you don’t have to be of any particular political persuasion to want a good education for your kid.
