Looking forward to 2022, the HPCC will be focusing on its mission to “support and promote a safe and healthy neighborhood for the diverse residents of Highland Park.” To start with, this month and next, we’ll be introducing three new occasional series in the newsletter to encourage people to support and celebrate diversity, each other, and our history: * Yinz All Together - a series introducing folks to some of the many organizations working to support diversity or underrepresented people in the community and the greater Pittsburgh area * Meet Your Neighbor - articles spotlighting some of the interesting and wonderful people of Highland Park * History, Houses, N’at - pieces showcasing the architecture and history of the neighborhood. Stephanie Walsh, HPCC President ** Recent neighborhood news ------------------------------------------------------------ * The Second Annual Highland Park Light-up Night brought out the lights, the neighbors, and the treats. Folks enjoyed specials ranging from festive coffee and discount burgers from the businesses on and near Bryant Street, to hot cocoa and homemade cookies across the ‘hood. And decorations ran the gauntlet from a lighted tree in the park’s entry garden to Winterton Street lined with luminaries, plus herds of reindeer, multitudes of Santas, and miles of lights in between. Thank you to everyone who participated, particularly our neighborhood businesses: Applewood Smoke Grill, Gallery Ama, La Scola’s, Panache, Park Place Pub, and Tazza D’oro. * 5G transmitters are being replaced. After investigating complaints from the neighborhood, HPCC, Highland Park Community Development Corporation and the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure found that transmitters installed at nine intersections in Highland Park were malfunctioning, causing excess noise 24/7. The HPCC and HPCDC are still concerned about the level of noise allowed in the city’s proposed new regulations for these devices and will continue to press the city for noiseless alternatives. Concerns about city services or infrastructure should be directed to 3-1-1, Councilwoman Gross (district7(a)pittsburghpa.gov (mailto:district7@pittsburghpa.gov) ), and the HPCC (HPCCPgh(a)gmail.com (mailto:HPCCPgh@gmail.com) ). * Construction on the new Super Playground is expected to begin soon and, if all goes according to plan (fingers crossed!), the new playground will be open by Memorial Day weekend. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy will be responsible for planting and maintaining 43 new trees on the site. The Yard Sale Organizer manages seller registrations, collects registration payments, produces printed and online maps, and coordinates with the organizer of the Bryant Street Festival (when applicable). The project requires a few hours of work a week for the two to three months leading up to the sale (the first Sunday in June), and a bit more in the final three weeks. Interested? Howdy Folks, Unfortunately the staffing issues have caught up with us. EFFECTIVE THURSDAY 1/27 WE WILL BE CLOSING EVERY DAY AT 5:00 PM During the week we will still open at 6:30 AM and on weekends we will open at 8:00 AM. Honestly, I'm just sick about the whole situation. We have a few people out, one in quarantine and one with a family issue. After this clears up we will post revised hours, even with 2 people coming back hopefully next week, we're still short. I will keep everyone updated as things happen. second addendum to Dog Bite email

I contacted the Allegheny County Health Department in an attempt to find information about dog bites. They were SO HELPFUL. I am so grateful. 1) An ER is required by law to report dog bites to the county health department. If they do so, the health department will typically follow up with the bite victim. (This did NOT happen in our case. Take note, if you go to West Penn ER for an animal bite; ACHD is following up with ER on this lapse.) 2) If you cannot locate the animal that bit you, CDC (and therefore ACHD) guidance is to administer PEP. While there is slim to zero chance a domestic animal has rabies, rabies is 99.9% fatal in humans if left untreated. If you cannot locate the animal, PEP is indicated. The End. Friend looking to rent house in Highland Park

Hello neighbors, A friend of mine and his fiance are interested in living in Highland Park. They are looking for a house with 2+ bedrooms and 1.5+ bathrooms, price range between 1800 and 2600/month, and a lease starting between May 1 and August 1. They haven't found much looking through the traditional channels (zillow, craigslist, etc.), so I thought I'd post here. dog care needed

I’m posting for a friend who will need someone to take care of her pup while she is undergoing medical procedures for somewhere between one and three months starting in March. The puppy, a mini sheepadoodle, is about 25 lbs and as cute as can be. She is also deaf. She is semi trained…. she was adopted right before my friend, who is elderly, hurt her back and had a difficult time caring for and training her. She is, however, about 80% potty trained. The pup’s deafness has hindered my friend being able to train her as well as she would like. I was planning to take care of the pup but she is difficult with other dogs. She’s very friendly and wants to play, play, play but she is overbearing and doesn’t hear my dogs warning growls. She shouldn’t be in a home with another dog unless you are a dog trainer and would like to take on a project. If you know of anyone who may be interested, or any suggestions of an organization that can be contacted, please let me know. Thanks Jamie
