Union Project Update - www.unionproject.org <http://www.unionproject.org/> - Union Project Christmas tree Recycling and Call for Volunteers The Union Project received another order of Christmas trees to restock the tree sale. The original 500 trees have all been sold! If you¹ve been waiting till the last minute to buy your tree, we¹ve got a good one for you. Trees will be on sale through the week, or until all the trees are sold. Fraser Firs and Blue Spruce trees up to 9 feet tall are still available. Prices range from $20 and up. Once this Christmas season has passed don't take your Christmas tree to the landfill! Union Project will accept your old tree (even if you didn't buy it from us) at the Union Project building between Saturday January 1 and Saturday, January 8. Please place your tree in the side yard in the area that has been designated for Christmas tree drop-off. Union Project members and volunteers will turn your tree into mulch for the Union Project flower beds from 12-4 pm on Saturday, January 8. If you'd like to volunteer to help mulch the trees contact justin(a)unionproject.org. Please DO NOT BRING YOUR TREE AFTER JANUARY 8. New Stained Glass Classes Announced for 2005 Stained glass classes for January are starting to fill up, especially the Saturday session. To register for stained glass classes at the Union Project please call 412-478-3105 or email justin(a)unionproject.org with your first and second choice class preferences. In this class you will learn to repair and restore stained glass windows. This course will take you through simple repairs to complete disassembling and reassembling of historic 100-year-old stained glass church windows. Completed windows remain the property of the Union Project. You will learn how to cut and replace broken or missing glass, glaze, lead, solder and putty a window. This course will give you enough background to make your own new stained glass windows or restore your historic windows. The class fee is $175. The class is open to students of any skill level. Union Project Announces Recent Grants The Union Project, an east end non-profit organization that is restoring the former Union Baptist Church to provide gathering and working space for artists, community builders and people of faith, has announced the receipt of three grants. ³The generosity of local foundations and the tremendous, ongoing grassroots support of our neighbors are the keys to this project¹s success,² says Jessica King, Executive Director. ³After three years of work, we have seen an upswing in support over the past few months that will allow us to complete the bulk of the project in the next six to eight months.² The Allegheny Foundation has approved a grant of $75,000 over three years for general operating support. Mennonite Economic Development Associates has approved a $13,000 sub-grant of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Compassion Capital Fund program. The Grable Foundation approved $60,000 over three years to support the planning and start up of "Union Station" a coffee café being planned in partnership with Peabody High School culinary arts academy students. ³Peabody High School is very pleased to be working with the Union Project to create Union Station,² says Anne Franks, Career Counselor at Peabody. ³This project gives our students a unique opportunity to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to the work environment, and to be a part of this exciting community effort.² The Union Project has begun renovations on the 15,000 square foot former church building. Leasable office spaces, a civic gathering space and art studios will be available in summer 2005. The 11 a.m. Service this Sunday at St. Andrew's will be the always-much-appreciated Children's Pageant of Christmas. The young people have been prepared by Pageant Musical Director Mark Spondike and a great crew of teachers and parents, and we're all encouraged to enjoy the morning and share our enthusiastic support! Then at 4:30 Sunday afternoon, the traditional service of Lessons and Carols at St. Andrew's, with readers from the parish and neighborhood, choral music, organ, and congregational singing in celebration of all the themes of this holy season. Union Project Update - www.unionproject.org - Stained Glass Auction Continues You may still bid on the special stained glass window donated to the Union Project. The window, while not a window from the Union Project, was restored by Richard Kerchner using techniques he learned in 2 Union Project stained glass restoration classes. The window is framed using historic oak hardwood salvaged from the Union Project Organ and refurbished by Don Reed of the Slaughterhouse Galleries in Lawrenceville. The window has been valued at $800 and you can see a picture of it by visiting www.unionproject.org <http://www.unionproject.org> , or by stopping by the Union Project. The auction will continue through December 18. The current bid is $500. Santa Claus to come to Christmas tree market at the Union Project! Christmas trees, wreaths, and other Christmas decorations are now on sale at the Union Project. Hours are11am to 9 pm, 7 days a week. Trees will are priced between $20 and $50, with proceeds benefiting the Union Project. >From the Highland Park Newsletter... HPCDC Update and Outreach The Highland Park Community Development Corporation will soon mark 12 years in our mission of neighborhood revitalization. Formed to partner with the Community Club to take on key, stubborn development challenges, we've faced both noteworthy successes-restoration of 5635 Stanton Avenue and leadership of the Highland Park Community Plan, for example-, as well as daunting challenges. Tackling some of the more difficult residential redevelopment properties in the City, recent years have been busy ones on the acquisition, design, funding, and partnership side. Moving these houses into "bricks and mortar" activity is the last remaining hurdle, and the process is underway. A major portion of the funding for 5 of our houses was just approved by the State, for instance, and we are truly excited about the coming months. Expect to hear more from us on this soon. On Bryant Street, revitalization carries real promise, and we will have progress to report to the Club in early 2005. At the State level, both the neighborhood and park are in final review for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. And in Highland Park itself we have been a key and leading partner in the Welcome Entry Fountain and Garden restoration now underway, as well as the very exciting planning efforts underway in Heth's Run that will connect the neighborhood and park to the river as never before. The entire board of the HPCDC sees 2005 as a year that will return us to the roots of our existence, development of the troubled portions of the SW Quadrant. If you'd like to be part of this, we have a few, important positions open on the board. In particular, we are seeking individuals with expertise in accounting, real estate, and design/construction. Commitment to the neighborhood, and the willingness to lend some of your already valuable time and skills to making this an even better place are the values we place first, however. On the board, just as in the neighborhood itself, we strive for diversity. Please contact any board member, or give me a call at 361-4935 if you'd like to talk about this opportunity. A final note: We hope to be coming to you soon with a letter expanding on some of these points, as well as to ask for your financial support in the operation of this neighborhood corporation. This lively, informative and educational 30-minute television show highlights the history, mission and direction of this special academic unit at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, PA. The one-on-one interview features Kenneth P. Service, Vice President for Institutional Relations at La Roche College and Executive Vice President of the Pacem-In-Terris Institute. Ken directs La Roche’s marketing, communications and public affairs along with overall direction for the famous Pacem-In-Terris Institute. Pacem-In-Terris (Latin for “Peace on Earth”) Institute offers a full-range of workshops, seminars and courses on a variety of topics designed to give the newly-arrived foreign students, and enrolled U.S. citizens, a solid background in international subjects like “Conflict Resolution.” Many of these students, who come from conflict-torn regions of the world, such as south-eastern Europe (Kosovo) and west Africa (Sierra Leone), can take what new skills and broader understanding are learned at the Pacem-In-Terris Institute directly back to their home countries. The U.S. students on campus also benefit from the direct interaction and camaraderie they share with the foreign students. Also presented on the show is a short-run video “The Promise Fulfilled” recounting the severe challenges facing a young man from Africa whose ambition for higher education set him on an exciting road leading to the U.S. The video was produced by the Pacem-In-Terris Institute. Ken Service, formerly in charge of media relations at the University of Pittsburgh, gave an in-depth interview and displayed a real-world understanding of the complex issues faced by foreign students during their four-year enrollment at La Roche College. Ken also discussed possible future options for foreign students after graduation and the critical importance of how a positive exposure to international students, by the larger U.S. student body at La Roche College, gives them a better appreciation for our rapidly “globalized” world. This is the second appearance by a representative from Pacem-In-Terris Institute on the Hola… show. In June, Hola… spoke with Natasha Garrett, the Director of Pacem-In-Terris Institute, along with four La Roche College students from the country of Equatorial Guinea, in West Africa, bordering the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. That small country, no larger than the state of Maryland, now ranks third in oil production from Africa after only Nigeria and Gabon. The recent gains in “petrodollar” wealth allowed the government of Equatorial Guinea to finance a multi-million dollar endowment for its young citizens to attend La Roche College.
