[Highland Park] Garden plots?

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anybody knows of a place nearby with small garden plots available. I would love to grow a few things this summer, but I rent, and therefore have no yard available. I really don't know anything about garden plots in the city, but have seen them before. I assume there's a cost to use them? If anybody could help me out with this I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Hi, A friend who lives in HP suggested that I forward this information to you, so it can be posted on the neighborhood message board. I hope that's possible. If you need anything further, or if this information isn't in a format you can use, please let me know. I'd just like to get the information out in an efficient way. I work in Highland Park, and recently volunteered to spread the word about a possible new pickup point in HP for Harvest Valley Farms' CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. CSA is a very cool national program where a household buys a seasonal "share" in a local farm and, in return, get first pick of fresh produce every week starting in June through the fall. I used to drive all the way to their farm in Bakerstown to pick up every week, and I very selfishly would prefer to get a group together in the city. Harvest Valley is at the zoo's farmer's market, too -- I think their stuff is the best -- but there's far less hassle with CSA. Art King, one of the brothers who runs Harvest Valley Farms, already has someone in HP who is willing to host the pick-up every week. He needs a minimum number of families enrolled in order for it to make sense for him. The details are in the attachments. The "rules" are very flexible, so it's possible for one family to sign up and then share the cost and weekly take with another family. You can send someone else to pick up your produce, too, so it won't go to waste if you're out of town or just can't get to HP between 4 and 7 p.m. This is a fantastic way to support an innovative family-owned farm that we're lucky to have so close by -- and to get a supply of produce to eat the same day it's been picked. Artists are requested to submit proposals for stained glass entry windows to be built and installed at the Union Project. A weekend stained glass restoration class has been announced that will repair and restore a large stained glass window that was removed from a six-unit apartment building at 839 N. The weekend stained glass restoration class is being planned for August 12-14. Class members will pay $250 to learn the craft of stained glass restoration, while at the same time providing valuable assistance to three local non-profit organizations that serve East Liberty and Highland Park. Magic Penny Garden Dates Announced Artist Stephanie Flom will be engaging community members to create a garden installation on our highly visible corner at Stanton and Negley Avenues this summer. Through the Persephone Project, Stephanie has been promoting gardening as contemporary art and gardeners as artists. Her Magic Penny Gardens are made with the perennial plants shared by community members and honor the stories that gardeners associate with the special plants that they share. Registered project participants will work with Stephanie to create a Magic Penny Garden for the Union Project. They will also explore her concept of gardens-as-art and share their own creative experiences in their gardens. Participants will also help to plan the community events associated with the garden and have an opportunity to stay involved for the on-going maintenance of the garden. Sessions will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 pm for 8 weeks beginning June 1 and running through July 20. The suggested donation to cover cost of materials is $25 per person. The Fifth Annual Pittsburgh Garden Swap, a non-profit event for gardening enthusiasts of all ages, is taking place on Saturday, May 14th at the Frick Environmental Center in Squirrel Hill. Spring is the time of year to thin out gardens, separate perennials and plan your 2005 gardening projects. The beauty of this annual event is the ability for local gardeners to share and trade treasures from their own gardens. Hi all, As spring is here, I am in need of someone to work on my front porch roof. It began leaking during the fall. Also, I have a dog who has thrown himself through a small wooden fence in my front yard. I would like to find used fencing, (maybe chain link), and/or someone to install it. [Highland Park] Yard Debris Drop-off now costs

I just got back from dropping off yard debris at the drop-off site in Point Breeze. They wanted to charge me $20 to drop off my yard waste. Starting February 1st, they are now charging trucks to drop off yard debris. If you have a car or SUV, it is free. I looked this up on the City's web site, and it is posted there. It says you have to have a money order also. It would have been nice if they would have put that on the garbage pickup schedule where they tell you what you can drop off. So now I have to put my yard debris out with the trash to go to a landfill, or I have to borrow a car to drop the stuff off. I could pay the $20, but that is not going to happen. Anyone have a car I can borrow to fill with yard waste? Just joking, I will use my mother's. I plan to call some City offices about this. Bob Staresinic
