Hi neighbors, We're new to HPark. Having moved from L.A. we're adjusting to living in frozen world (though our hearts are melting as Pittsburgh, and our neighborhood, reveal their treasures). We're looking for the following: - A local chiropractor that takes Blue Cross. - A local accupuncturist and/or herbalist. - A progressive pediatrician who supports parents who elect not to immunize. - A local play group for our 2-1/2 year old daughter. - A group of progressive/leftist/artist/green parents who socialize with kids. - A babysitter for evenings 8-11 pm ($7/hour). - Modern furniture that's in good shape...IKEA is fine. We don't want antiques unless they're modern '60s stuff. We sold much of our big stuff in L.A. Especially seeking: (1) a narrow table to add a work surface to our kitchen (2) a portable dishwasher (3) An entertainment unit for TV, stereo, etc. (4) Desks (5) Large throw pillows. (6) A bean bag chair (7) Lamps of various kinds. (8) Coffee tables. (9) Book shelves. (10) A storage cabinet or filing cabinet for an office. (11) Area rugs if not Persian style. (12) A Thomas the Train train set with play table (we've priced the full set new and are looking to get it used/discounted). (13) Leggo blocks (14) Kid's clothing, girl, age 3. (15) A keyboard, but higher end...the kind that sound like real pianos but look like casios. (16) Picture frames, preferably with matting. (17) An artist's easel, wood. (18) A DVD player. The description of the armed robbers given below from Saturday afternoon on Bryant Street is actually pretty similar to ours of the guys who attacked us on N. Euclid on Saturday evening--though we didn't see or hear anything about a gun (thankfully). I think Dan Sweeney's word of encouragement about taking on some proactivity is helpful. We had the beginnings of a block-watch program in the Community Club a number of years ago (I think maybe Jan Stayanos was involved?), but interest seemed to fade after a while. Certainly the more people "out and about" and keeping an eye on things the better--and a bit of organization might be helpful in that department. Dear Bruce, First, I am relieved to learn that you are recovering in both body and spirit. I don't want to think about what we would all do without your strength and guidance. I was assaulted late at night once when I lived in Brighton Heights, so I get it when you say that you're relieved to have escaped any further injury. But I'm troubled my the message that we should cover up, hand over all we've got and beg for mercy. That feels like an invitation to more assaults. We should not wait for help from the police on this. I've spoken to four police officers in the past year and they all have the same message, "We are so understaffed, we sometimes have three guys show up for roll call." I know that the 14th Ward and Brighton Heights have had citizens' groups, with police mentorship and supervision, patroling the streets in cars. Should we be talking about starting that here? Taking that stand appeals to me more than waiting my turn to play the victim. This was pretty rough and pretty intense. A couple of comments. For Commander Brackney, I just want to say that the Zone 5 group, especially Officer Strachan, who responded very quickly when we got to 911, and who scoured then neighborhood looking for these bad guys, and for the medic team, were all great. Better than great. Courteous and compassionate and very patient with a couple of very shaken-up victims. Thanks to them all. And our neighbors and friends in the parish and up and down the block have been so very kind and supportive. Our next door neighbors Rick and Mary were outside within a couple of minutes to express their concern and friendship. We've had cookies and nice notes, calls, e-mails--all with much encouragement. There is no question in my mind but that this is the best neighborhood in the city--certainly the neighborhood with the best people. I've had also some reflections about the incident itself. I don't know if there's much to do about the actual event. These two guys were probably just cruising, looking for "something." Maybe a car to steal, or a passer-by to roll, etc., but without a particular plan in mind. We just happened down the block at the unfortunate, intersecting moment--and if it hadn't been us it probably would have been someone else or something else. But once the attack started I think I at least didn't react too wisely. I haven't been in any kind of physical altercation since about the 8th grade, and most of my adult athletic activities have been in the long-distance running, stairmaster climbing category, but for some reason I decided on the spot to get in touch with my inner Sly Stallone--to put up some resistance to this attack, hitting back at first, then yelling and trying to get away--maybe for 15-20 seconds, anyway. If he'd had a gun he probably would have shot me--and perhaps if I'd been more compliant after the initial tackle I wouldn't have gotten so beat-up. Who knows? Mike didn't resist, and he got slammed all the same. It's certainly difficult to second-guess, and there actually wasn't much "thinking" going on in the moment. Just gut reactions. But I think I'd want to do it differently if it happened again. Also, a good idea on reflection, my brother-in-law was able to give his cash to "his" assailant separately from the rest of his wallet--thus managing not to lose credit cards and other personal items. I'm in the future going to think pretty seriously about what I carry and how I carry it. But again, with thanks to all for kind thoughts, prayers, and best wishes. It was a scary deal, but the swelling is going down, and we're getting better. The robbery and assault occurred while Frank was walking home from the Walnut Market on Millbrae Way, one block from Highland Avenue, between Bryant and Elgin Streets. The youth may have followed him from the Walnut Market, suspecting he had money. The police were immediately called and the incident reported. Hi All - I wanted to alert you that someone attempted to get into both of our cars that were parked in our driveway last night sometime between 11:15pm-6:45am on the 5600 block of Elgin Street. Since there was fresh snow, we were able to see the footprints in our driveway going to both cars. There was so damage and they were unable to get in.
