One of my guests at my New Years party had his back windshield smashed tonight on Jackson Street across from Collins. What a shame what this neighborhood has to put up with!

More reasons to stay alert: My rear windshield got completely smashed in sometime between the 22nd and 26th. My car was parked on Callowhill Dr. during that period. I couldn't see anything around that might have smashed it, so it looked like vandalism to me. I did file one of those over-the-phone police reports. On the 27th, as I was cleaning up the glass, a man in an older dark green sedan did a couple of very slow drive-bys until I said, "What do you want?" and he sped off. Just seemed kind of suspicious.

[Highland Park] Looking out for neighbors

Hello Neighbors! I'm very concerned about what I experienced this morning. This takes place in the South West Quadrant of Highland Park. I found someone's property in the back alley. I called 911 to report it. When the officer came out it turns out the vehicle next to the property that has been parked in the neighboring house, is stolen. They had it towed. However, THE person who does finger printing is off today so it won't get checked for finger prints. The officer tried to make me feel better by saying that with weather and rain it's hard to get prints, dirt, etc. Well, it was just stolen yesterday, there hasn't been rain or snow, the steering column was busted, the steering wheel is smooth, the gear shift is smooth...not buying it! As many of you know, I have been the target of retribution several times over the 8 years we've lived here, yet I continue to do what I believe it right and report what I see and try to look out for my neighbors and others! Is it true that the cops are just administrators to clean up and re-distribute stolen property? Isn't vehicle theft a pretty hefty crime? Do you think the people who stole this car and saw me talking with the cops are going to just let it slide?! Yes, I can just hear them saying "oh, darn, they took that car. That Shelly, got me again!" I've called Zone 5, emailed the commander (I think she's off today) and called my contacts, but no one has any suggestions. Am I just a sucker?! Please let me know if you have any ideas/suggestions for me. I'm just glad someone will have their car back for Christmas, however, I don't want to suffer for it. By the way, when my tires were slashed a couple months back, I received a money order for $25 from an anonymous person. Thank you! You gave me hope! [Highland Park] Traffic, pedestrians, and the same old story

Hi all - and especially Cmdr Brackney - I was at the Dilworth holiday concert last night with my kids. Great show. I took their hands and we had just started to cross Collins on the Dilworth side of Stanton - when a fairly ratty old sedan sped up, blew through the crosswalk and stop sign, and stopped halfway into Stanton - missing my kids and I by about a foot (and clearly going faster than the speed limit). Being a mama bear, I blurted out a "Hey! Watch it!" without really thinking about whether it was a good idea. The driver, an early 20s male, leaned over his passenger and screamed at me to F off, called me a f-in you know what, my fault for walking in front of his god**** car, then leaned out pointed at my kids and said "F*** you, and F*** you, and F*** yo mama!" I probably don't need to go into the effect this had on my kids. OK. Learned my lesson. Bite tongue when dealing with nearly being killed by speeding driver who blows through stop sign. No need to castigate me offlist for bad judgment. But frankly, the traffic around Dilworth is a dangerous thing on any given day, and this is just the latest near miss. Furthermore, there were hundreds of folks - with lots of young children - pouring out of the building. It could have happened to anyone. This traffic area has been a frequent topic of discussion on this list and at our PTA meetings - as have drivers like this guy. What - if anything - can be done? Helen
