[Highland Park] Walkers needed for fundraising walk

For posting to Highland Park List Serve: My agency, ACHIEVA, is looking for people who would be able to walk in the 2008 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community on May 3 at Heinz Field. ACHIEVA is the largest provider of lifetime supports for people with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays and their families in our region. ACHIEVA's programs cover all of western Pennsylvania but our two main offices are in Beaver and on the South Side of Pittsburgh. ACHIEVA along with 36 other charities are the beneficiaries of this event. Highmark pays for all of the costs associated with the walk so all of the money raised by us and the other agencies goes right back to us. There is no cost to participate but a donation is required to receive a walk t-shirt. Participants are encouraged to collect donations to sponsor them. [Highland Park] 4 Brand New Tires P215/65R15 Only $250

Dear Neighbors, My loss could be your gain. Two weeks ago I spent over $600 getting Goodyear Assurance tires on our 11 year old Plymouth Voyager. A week later our engine broke and it's off to the junkyard. P215/65R15 will fit most minivans and many other cars. I am trying to get $250 for these tires. These are 80,000 mile tires, with about 40 miles on them. They are currently off the car, but still on the 5 lug steel rims. If our rims match, I would be willing to change the tires myself. The advantage to taking rims and tires is that they have new valves and are already spun and balanced, which is usually about $12 per tire. Otherwise I will get them removed from the rims at Goodyear. [Highland Park] Suspicious Person At My Door Sunday Night

Hi neighbors, Just want to give everyone a heads up about an incident that occurred at my house in Morningside - which is only 6 houses in from the border with Highland Park, about a 3 block walk from the Union Project. Ultimately, nothing criminal occurred - but it was very suspicious. Between 9:30 and 10:00 pm on Easter Sunday (3/23/08), I heard a loud knock at my front door. The man at the door introduced himself as "Oliver" and described himself as a neighbor whose car had broken down and he just needed some help - just $3 would do it. As if to prove his case, he pressed a drivers license up against the window of my front door (I never opened the door). When I said I couldn't help him, but I'd be happy to call the police to come and help him out, he said "No, please don't do that, there's no need for that." By the time I had gone to grab my phone and come back to the front door, he was gone. I called 911 to report the incident and an officer came by within 15 minutes or so, spotlighting my property first and then coming to the front door to talk with me before further patrolling the area. "Oliver" was African American, medium to light complexion, in his 30's or 40's, with a mustache and wearing a gray hat (an "ivy cap" style hat according to my search online). I was not able to read his drivers license through my window. His obvious panic when I said I'd be happy to call the police to come help him was the most striking thing about the conversation. Ultimately, nothing criminal has yet happened related to this, but it was a strange interaction, and I wanted to give everyone a heads up. In case this makes you want to become more actively involved in public safety issues in our area, I do encourage you to attend the Citizen's Public Safety Committee Meeting for Zone 5 the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Union Project. I have attended 3 since August and have found them to be very helpful in finding ways to work constructively with law enforcement and other community groups to address crime in our area. Neighbors, This is an update to the work some of us are doing on the gun violence issue. We have a growing coalition of local residents, including Highland Park neighbors, as well as local doctors, members of law enforcement including Police Chief Nate Harper, Detective Jill Rustin of the Firearms Tracing Unit, our own Rashall Brackney, Pittsburgh City Council President Doug Shields with the support of the entire council, Mr. Shields' wife Briget Shields, and staff and board members of CeaseFire PA. As you know, on March 17, CeaseFIre held a rather impressive press conference in the capitol rotunda in Harrisburg. There were many speakers and attendees there supporting sensible gun laws. After the conference, we went door knocking to speak to individual representatives to ask them to vote yes on the lost or stolen reporting amendment (called the Levdansky amendment). The house ended up debating the amendment until 11:00 p.m. that night to avoid voting on it. The debate was postponed until March 31st. We are mobilizing to contact our legislators this week to show our support for this amendment and encourage them to vote "yes" on the Levdansky amendment. The more calls they receive the better, so please do what you can! Below are talking points for your calls to PA legislators as well as contact information for the representatives. If you wish, you may incorporate the talking points into a letter to the editor and/or organizational letters of support that you would like to write. Any letters of support should go to Representative David Levdansky. If you would like your name included on a group letter to the editor, please let me know. Also, if anyone is interested in joining our coalition, please let me know your general availability for an in-person planning meeting in the next two weeks. I'd like to know if you prefer daytime or evening, and if specific days are never good for you, etc. Your suggestions for a convenient meeting place are welcome as well. Jana Finder **************************************** Dear Member of the Allegheny County/CeaseFirePA coalition against handgun violence, CeaseFirePA thanks you for your help and your work on this critically important issue. Mandatory reporting of lost or stolen handguns to the police is a common sense reform whose time has come in Pennsylvania. Law enforcement and police across Pennsylvania strongly support a lost or stolen handgun reporting law as a key tool to help police crack down on straw buyers of illegal handguns. The Pittsburgh Police Department, led by Chief Nathan Harper, supports a lost or stolen handgun reporting requirement. The PA Police Chiefs Association supports this law. So does the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Last week, the PA House of Representatives considered and debated this bill on the floor of the House. It marked the first time in 10 years a handgun violence prevention law reached the House floor, a historic moment. The bill is an amendment to H.B.1845, and the amendment is sponsored by Rep. David Levdansky, D-Allegheny County. The Levdansky Amendment requires people who buy a handgun to report the handgun if lost or stolen to the police within three days of discovering the loss or theft. Violating this law brings penalties ranging from a summary offense for a first violation to a felony for repeat violators. The Levdansky Amendment (A06178) is pending in the House now. But opponents of this common sense reform, led by the NRA, don’t want this amendment to ever be brought up for a vote. They want it to just go away. We cannot let them do that. Opponents in the House, led by the NRA, are raising a host of procedural objections, all under the guise of questioning the bill’s constitutionality, for one purpose only: They don’t want to vote on this common sense reform. They don’t want to let the people of Pennsylvania know where they stand on the lost or stolen handgun reporting law. The debate and voting on the lost or stolen handgun reporting bill will resume next Monday, March 31st, in the House of Representatives. Time is of the essence! We need Allegheny County residents, elected officials and others to call their local state representatives and urge them to do the following when the House returns next week: 1. Vote NO on any procedural motion to defeat the lost or stolen handgun reporting bill sponsored by Rep. Levdansky (A6178 to H.B. 1845). 2. Vote YES on the Levdansky Amendment. This amendment is the lost or stolen handgun reporting law. Below is a list of Allegheny County House members, by party and district #, along with a thumbnail of where they stand on the issue (according to telephone surveying of all House members conducted by CeaseFirePA.) These phone calls to House members in the next few days before March 31st can make a difference. The calls should be made tomorrow, Wed., March 26th, Thurs., March 27th and Friday March 28th to have the desired effect. Let your representative know you care about growing handgun violence in Allegheny County and across Pennsylvania and you want them to act – now. Support the Levdansky Amendment and vote YES for a reporting requirement for lost or stolen handguns.
