Two highlights remain in the calendar of the St. Andrew's 2009 All Saints Music Festival -- October 30, Friday evening, 8 p.m. An evening of 16th and 17th Century Song, "By Candlelight," with soprano Sara Botkin and lutist Scott Pauley. November 1, All Saints Day, Sunday morning, 11 a.m. Orchestral Eucharist, W.A. Mozart, Missa Brevis, in G major. The Pittsburgh Festival Orchestra and the Choir of St. Andrew's Church, under the direction of Ayo Oluranti, St. Andrew's Assistant Organist and Composer in Residence. Festive receptions follow, and all are welcome. "Free and Open to the Public!" *And a second reminder: Fall Back! [Highland Park] Car Break In

When I arrived home at 10:30 pm last night, after I parked the car 2 guys were standing by their car. They informed me that their car had been broken into and to be careful. The car window had been shattered on the passenger side and they where checking to see if any items were missing. This happened near the corner of Hampton and Negley. In hindsight I should have told them to file a police report. Pam

[Highland Park] Experience we had last holiday season at a nursing home

Hello neighbors I wanted to pass along word of a program that I knew nothing about until a colleague let me know about it last year. The program is called Presents for Patients and in a nut shell, you sign up online to adopt a local nursing home resident this holiday. These residents are identified by social workers in nursing homes in our community as having very few visitors. The idea is you match with them, bring a little gift, and share your time. The Presents for Patients team will tell you what your specific resident may need (like slippers) but you can offer other items as well. The residents like items made by children. The visit is the real gift. So the time commitment is really small, but the emotional high is great. I don't work for this program; I'm simply sharing our experience. My husband and 2-year old son and I were matched with a resident last year at the VA home up the hill from our neighborhood. If you've never been up there - it's like being in another world. I had no idea the facilities were so huge and serve so many. The resident to whom we were matched was a vet of the Korean War and while he could not speak, he understood every word of our conversation and indicated so by blinking and nodding. The warmth of this time we spent with him was very moving. I've done other programs like The Giving Tree where you offer gifts to a family. While I like those programs, and will participate in them again this year, I like the Presents for Patients program even better because you get to connect with a real person. It's an hour of my time with my family and a special resident that I carry with me in my heart all year long. There are over 300 participating nursing homes the region. You give them your zip code, and they help match you up with a resident in a home nearby. The VA home is one near Highland Park, but of course, there are dozens more to chose from. Last year this program matched up people like us to over 25,000 residents. [Highland Park] Laptop Repair Needed

My (Gateway M-series) laptop has a broken button (the left button below the touchpad). There are a few other non-critical repairs/upgrades I'm considering, as well, but the mouse button is the most urgent problem. I'd appreciate recommendations of and/or direct emails from someone who could do the repair. I need someone who can do it quickly, as I'm currently writing my dissertation on this laptop, so I can't afford a lot of downtime. Extra points for someone who won't charge me an arm and a leg, as this is a 2-year-old, low-end laptop, and I'm a poor grad student. Thanks in advance! Julie
