Market update for Saturday May 29th Olive Oil Update I am happy to report that the California Olive Oil bar is up and running! All the olive oils we offer originate from specific farms in California. Like our coffee, the oils are being brought in directly from the farm- no middle me or wholesalers. The oils are guaranteed to have been pressed within the last year. These oils were pressed in November or December of 2009. And of course all of the oil is Extra Virgin in accordance with the standards of the California Olive Oil Council. We will dispense the oil out of bulk containers into reusable bottles. All of the oils can be tasted before you buy them. We have 500ml and 250ml bottles for sale, but feel free to bring your own- we will fill any clean glass bottle. Since we are selling the oil by weight, you will not "overpay" when you buy small quantities. In fact I encourage people to buy small quantities so you are always using fresh oil. That give you an extra incentive to come back to the market often to get your bottles filled and to load up on all the other products offered at the market. We have four offerings for this Saturday.... Rancho Arroyo Grande Two different oils come from Rancho Arroyo Grande farm- Frantoio Extra Virgin, and Leccino Extra Virgin Olive Oil. They both have a distinctive taste. Rancho Arroyo Grande is located at the head of Arroyo Grande Valley, just 13 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Its 3,400 acres of sloping hillsides, woodlands, pastures and vineyards are bordered by the mountain ranges of Los Padres National Forest. An abundance of wildlife – including bears, mountain lions, bobcats and wild boar – demonstrates the isolated and unspoiled nature of this farm. Their main crop is grapes for wine making, but they also grow Leccino and Frantoio olives. The fruit was harvested in late November and early December last year. The olives were milled at Figueroa Farms in Santa Ynez. Figueroa Farms is a family run operation operated by Shawn and Antoinette Addison. In addition to growing olives and making their own oil, they also make oil for other growers using their state of the art Pieralisi olive mill from Italy. Olinda Ridge Farm This is their Estate Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is a blend of Mission and Manzanillo olives. Olinda Ridge farm is located in Butte county in northern California. The olives are grown on a 10 acre grove. The trees on the property are very old- as olives have been grown on the farm since 1890. Olinda Ridge uses natural and sustainable farming methods and a small batch-crafted process to ensure that the extra virgin olive oil has superb flavor, are of the freshest and highest quality. Corto Olive Farm Corto Olive Farm is one of several agribusiness enterprises owned by the Cortopassi family. The farm is located in Stockton, which is in California’s “Central Valley.” This is the same place where Heinz grows its tomatoes for Kethcup. Corto is a large scale operation that uses a new system for growing olives called “Super High Density.” The trees are small and are planted close together. The olives are harvested mechanically. The advantage is that olives are moved from the tree to finished oil within 24 hours. The olives are milled on the farm in Corto’s state of the olive milling machine. This oil is a blend of Arbequina and Arbosana olives ****************************************************************************************************************************************** J.L.
