Hi Everyone! I got many, many thoughtful and thorough responses to my recent inquiry on Pittsburgh Pre-K programs. Each school has scores listed under general information. http://www.pps.k12.pa.us/1431105115023673/site/default.asp http://www.youthworksinc.org/about_youthworks/who_we_are/staff.html this has info about school board reps (would probably be in Highland Park--Dara Ware Allen) Below is a list that is complied from things on this page http://www.pittsburghcityliving.com/neighborhoodProfile.php?neighborhood=Ea… and then I have added some additional comments that people have made about individual schools... • Public Schools The Pittsburgh Public School District - which was recently named one of the Country's Top Ten Large Urban Districts by GreatSchools.org - offers a mix of neighborhood schools and specialized magnet choices: .Pittsburgh Liberty International Studies K-5 Magnet (This is in Shadyside, about a 5 minute drive from HP and easily accessible by buses.) (Spanish Magnet) .Pittsburgh Montessori PreK-5 Magnet (This is very close to Highland Park--it is in the Friendship area. About 5 minutes and accessible by bus.) It is the only public montessori program around, The classrooms are mixed age. So 3, 4 and K is together. 1st – 3rd grade are together. Pre-K gets to participate in all the “specials” like music, art, Spanish, gym, library .Pittsburgh Fulton International Studies PreK-5 Magnet (This is in Highland Park) is now the French Magnet .Pittsburgh Dilworth Traditional Academy PreK-5 Arts and Humanities magnet school (this is on border of East Liberty and Highland Park) .Pittsburgh Obama International Baccalaureate 6-12 Magnet (this program is moving to the Peabody High School in Highland Park starting next year. This will be IN our neighborhood, so it will be great magnet for high school.) .Environmental Charter School at Frick Park The school begins in Kindergarten, so unfortunately no Pre-K program is available. This year enrollment begins Nov 1 thru Feb 14 .Pittsburgh Linden K-5 Linden does not have a pre-K program. The kids spend a lot of time outdoors hiking .Waldorf School of Pgh, in Friendship/Bloomfield, They have pre-K through 5th and are working on a middle school. http://waldorfpittsburgh.org/ .Shadyside Presbyterian Church Nursery School (SPCNS) .Carriage House Children's Center in Squirrel Hill -a private pre-K .St. Raphael Preschool in Morningside The three year old program is Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and our 4 year old program is Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m .Sacred Heart on Highland Ave. in Shadyside. They do have a pre-school .Rodef Shalom preschool in Shadyside/Oakland Mimsie Leyton is the preschool director #412-621-6566 .Kentucky Avenue School (Shadyside) They have individualized curriculum for each child, they have a pre-school,and it is a very small school .Pittsburgh Urban Christian School.www.pucs.org This year the application for Pittsburgh Public School preschool program was due by March 31, 2010. Four year olds have preference over three year olds. Kids with siblings in the school have the first preference. That's a rough compilation of the many, many great responses I got. [Highland Park] First Thursday Evensong

The first "First Thursday Evensong" of our fall season will be this Thursday evening, October 7, beginning at 8 p.m. St. Andrew's Choir, under the direction of Peter Luley, will sing the Evening Service in G Major, by C.V. Stanford, anthems by Richard Lloyd ("View Me, Lord") and Samuel Sebastian Wesley ("Thou wilt keep him"), and the Responses, by Richard Ayleward. Our "First Thursday" services are followed each month by a musical recital. This month we welcome again our good friends, "The Balkan Babes," a wonderful Pittsburgh ensemble singing traditional sacred and secular music of Eastern and Southern Europe. Their program will begin in the Church and then continue in Brooks Hall, with musical accompaniment for the dessert reception. All are welcome. Dear Neighbors, Stewardship of a neighborhood is a responsibility shared by every resident. Stewardship can mean an activity like maintaining your property or cleaning up loose debris and litter around your house. But it can also mean participating as a member of a civic organization, a church or coaching youth athletics. In either case, such activities take time and dedication and are the backbone of any good neighborhood. I was reminded of the power of stewardship a few weeks ago when Councilman Dowd’s office helped to coordinate a meeting between members of the Morningside Athletic teams, MACC’s Beautification and Greening Committee and representatives from the City of Pittsburgh. The topic at hand: improving the quality of Heth’s and Natoli Fields. The conversation among participants was energetic, solutions offered were creative and the possibilities of working together were endless. During the meeting, looking at the twenty or so attendees, one couldn’t help but be impressed by the number of attendees and the dedication each person displayed – particularly considering the size of our community. Morningside offers residents plenty of opportunities to fulfill these civic responsibilities. On October 16th you’ll have the chance to meet your neighbors through a full day of activities that demonstrate one of Morningside’s greatest assets: the volunteers that make these opportunities possible. Beginning at 10 a.m. at the VFW parking lot, MACC will be hosting the final neighborhood clean up of the year. We’re looking for volunteers so please stop on by. Following the clean up, MACC will be hosting the 2nd Annual Fall-O-Ween Festival in the Morningside Business District. Live music and food will be available at this family-friendly event beginning at 2pm. Meanwhile, at Natoli Field, Morningside Football will be in action all day. Making these events possible and creating neighborhood improvements takes time, plenty of patience and preparation. Please take time to lend your neighbors a hand and also thank these dedicated volunteers. Costumes encouraged. $5 suggested donation per family RSVP to jennyjomac(a)gmail.com >From the Office of Representative Dom Costa Dear Friends & Neighbors, Fall is upon us; winter with its harsh weather isn’t far behind.That is why I want to remind you about the state’s LIHEAP program to help you pay your winter heating bills, and let you know about ACCESS service to Morningside, and my Senior Fair that will provide free flu shots. I have been working tirelessly with Port Authority to restore bus service for the Morningside area. While progress has been slow, I have been able to obtain ACCESS/OPT service for our senior citizens – many of whom do not drive, or are uncomfortable driving in bad weather – by providing them transportation to shop at Waterworks Mall. As many of you may already know, there is now an ACCESS/OPT bus designated for Morningside residents age 60 and older at 10 AM on Tuesdays and 12:30 PM on Thursdays. ACCESS will pick you up at your home or the Senior Center, take you to the Waterworks Mall and return you right to your door. Fare is 3 OPT tickets each way ($0.75). You must call ACCESS the day before to schedule pick up. I was hoping that this service would be so popular that we could use the overwhelming response to show Port Authority how badly we need service restored to the neighborhood. Unfortunately, four weeks into this program, we are already in danger of losing it since no one has utilized it. Please know that I have not stopped fighting for service restoration but also understand, if this service is not utilized within the next three weeks, it will be discontinued, and along with it goes our bargaining chip for service to the Waterworks/St. Margaret’s area. I will be holding a Senior Fair on Wednesday, November 10th from 10 AM to 1:00 PM at the Cherry City Volunteer Fire Hall. There will be free flu shots, free health screenings, representatives from several senior programs and speakers on PACE, PACEnet, the doughnut hole and the new changes coming to insurance coverage. There will also be free light refreshments, and my staff and I will be on hand to help you with any state government-related question you may have. I look forward to seeing you there. Don’t forget that the LIHEAP program will begin taking applications in November. LIHEAP helps low income people pay their heating bills. You can receive this money without being in the Cash Assistance program and no lien is placed on your property. CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY The Pittsburgh’s Citizens Police Academy brings the police and the community close together in a setting that offers a sample of police training to each participant. Sponsored by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, this program is given twice a year for members of the community who wish to become closely acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the Police Bureau. The 15-week program meets one evening a week for three hours of training. Participants are exposed to the operations of the Police Bureau, taught the basics of criminal law, search and seizure, patrol tactics, firearms, and other highlighted police training topics. They also learn about processing a crime scene, conduct a ride-along with an officer, and will meet many street officers as well as command and training staff. [Highland Park] child car seats

I have a half a dozen 5-point harness car seats rattling around my house. Pretty sure they are all Graco. My kids outgrew them (just fyi, for the cautious types: my youngest is 3, and my guys are the youngest of a dozen grandkids, so we have all sorts of gear to spare, even of stuff the littlest is still using one of). I know Goodwill and Vietnam Vets won't take car seats, even if they are in good shape (yes) and have never been in a car accident (no). I am pretty sure Freecycle also has the same restrictions, although I will doublecheck. If there's anyone who needs an extra carseat for, I don't know, a grandparent's or babysitter's car or an extra for some reason, you are welcome to one or all of mine. Email me back. I hate to just stick them out for the trash but that's the only other option.
