[Highland Park] Let's Not Be Victims!

The recent (though yet in another line of) rash of reports of car and house break-ins is upsetting. But there are things that we can do to stop being victimized as a neighborhood. The reporting system via the listserve is great. We should definitely let each other know what is going on. We should also know who are our immediate neighbors are. This is immensely important. Please get to know your neighbors. Get to know when they come and go, what car they drive, and who they associate with. This does not have to be nosy. This is a safety precaution. Know when someone looks suspicious. Know when to report it. Please always lock your cars and your houses at all times; set alarms if you have them. Please do not leave any valuables in your car at any time. Call the police ANY time you are victimized or ANY time you see suspicious activity. No harm comes to you from reporting; harm can come to you and others from not reporting. My hope is that Highland Park can become known as a difficult place to victimize. We need the whole neighborhood to participate!

[Highland Park] Lemonade Stand on Mellon Sunday, June 12

Hi Neighbors! My sons will be running a lemonade stand tomorrow in the 900 block of Mellon (at one of the houses on the Chicks-in-the-Hood Urban Chicken Coop Tour, which you should also be checking out tomorrow). They're selling fresh-squeezed lemonade (yes, from real lemons) for $2/cup. They've decided they'll be donating half of their lemonade profits this summer to local animal shelters. So swing by the 900 block of Mellon between 10 and 2 tomorrow for some yummy lemonade made by two generous and highly entertaining young men. If you're looking for lemonade later in the week (or later this summer), they typically set up shop in the 5800 block of Wellesley, but their business hours are pretty erratic. I'll send advisories the night before when I know ahead of time that they're planning to be "open for business." Thanks! Julie

Attempted robbery at our home on Wayne Rd. The security system, dog and police showing up w/i a couple of minutes scared off the burglar. (Awesome response from the cops by the way- thanks so much!) He attempted to enter through an unlatched window in the rear at approximately 1:30pm this afternoon. We got a description (my dad saw him leaving our driveway): late teens, african american male, light skin, white shirt, clean cut, on a bicycle.
