[Highland Park] summary of replies to the 'separate the list serv' idea

I got over 55 replies to the email I posted the other day suggesting that we separate the 'stuff for sale' posts from the 'neighborhood news' posts on the HP list serv. The response was overwhelmingly in favor of the idea. Some of these folks replied to the list as a whole, many replied to me directly. The comments I received directly were generally in keeping with those that were made public. Two neighbors expressed that they were fine with using their spam folders to filter out the "for sale" items, and that two list servs were too many - one was enough. One neighbor replied with some ideas about using a different technology platform altogether. Perhaps this warrants discussion with the folks who maintain the list. I can think of a few ways to approach this and will be happy to participate in these conversations. I think its important to note that our community includes a number of people who are not really "into" computers, and are comfortable using email but not much else beyond that. As there can be information on the list-serv that has value to these people, I think we need to be careful that we choose an approach that includes these neighbors as well as those who have more advanced skills. I realize this idea I have floated potentially creates more work for those neighbors who so generously donate their time to maintain and moderate this list. It is not my intention to exploit these folks, but it seems like it might be time to evolve this feature of our community to the next level. I am happy to participate in that transition. Hi Neighbors, We have an IKEA HEMNES bunk bed for sale. The bed is made of solid pine. Very sturdy. It can have the ladder installed on either right, or left side of the bed. The bunk bed can be also split into two twin size beds. Unlike other bunk beds, this one has a generous head room between the beds, thus excellent for taller people. Comes with the original instruction manual. This is a great bed and shows very little signs of use. Comes from a smoke-free home. Asking $195.00. Caroline Harris

Hello neighbors! We have a first floor apartment for rent, beginning Sept. 1st. Very nice 2 bedroom apt - spacious, clean, and renovated in 2010. Close to bus lines on Highland and Negley, allowing ready access to Oakland and other East End neighborhoods. First floor of Victorian house has 10’ ceilings and 6’ windows. Lots of light. Built-in bookcases in LR and lovely mantels in the LR and DR. Fireplaces are non-functional. Gas heat and central AC, w/w in LR, DR, hall, & BRs with tile floors at entry and in kitchen and bath. Kitchen is small, but has good cabinet space, newer fridge, gas range, and a dishwasher. Ceiling fans in DR & BRs. Custom mini-blinds on windows and doors. Newer storm doors and Marvin windows with screens. Recently painted in neutral colors. Tenants share free w/d in cellar, fenced backyard, and large side yard with 2nd flr landlords. Space will be allowed for garden, if desired. One off-street parking space is included in the lease.Rent is $950.00 plus electric per month. We pay for gas and water. We will check your references – employer, previous landlord, etc. Clean, vaccinated, housetrained, and leash walked pets (up to 2) are OK – but we will also check their references, e.g. vet, trainer, previous landlord and neighbors. We are looking for a family, professionals, grad students, or other responsible adults. We live on the 2nd floor. We would like to have clean, quiet, friendly people downstairs – who would sign a lease for a year, or preferably, stay longer. We can provide references as well. We are quiet landlords.
