masks project

Dear neighbors, After much research and input from people in our wonderful neighborhood I have come to the conclusion that sheeting materials, pillow cases etc and flannel or t-shirt materials will be best for the masks making. We all have those in our own linen closet. A local doctor told me that she would be using 20 a day and those could be washed at night. These home made masks also will serve as "professional masks" covers so those will be used longer. So until our leadership gets its act together we can help ourselves. I will make a bunch of mask today that can easily be duplicated easily.It takes me about 15 minutes to make one. they will be in a box on my front porch tomorrow morning. 5900 Hampton Street.I will have a sign up sheet . please take one of the masks and some of the cut up material for the ties and after you have made a bunch return those you made signing up on the sheet so I keep track . I then will wash, package and distribute from the list of people who wants them. If you'd like one for your use you may take one as well. Understand that you still will have to use common sense and follow the guidelines well published of self isolation. These masks will NOT make you invincible but will be some help from what i have read and from what the whole country is doing. Thanks for your help. Elisabeth

Update: we will open on Sunday the same time. I’m re-posting this for people who have yet to see it. Hello neighbors, As we all know, the current circumstances are difficult at best. We want you to know that we at Food Glorious Food, are taking FULL precautions to protect our customers and our staff! That being said, We hope we can offer some comfort in this time of need by opening on Friday and Saturday from 10am-2pm<x-apple-data-detectors://1> the 20th and 21st to offer pre-packaged meals and desserts TO GO... Among other items, we will be offering soups, pastas, vegetarian items, fried rice, trays of mac & cheese, whole quiches, cookies, kolackies, pies and some cakes... Hi Neighbors, I have been experimenting with patterns today and I think this is the best ones so far. The other flatter ones just do not hug the face completely unless it is tied with ties as described below.. Our doctor friend and neighbor whose expertise was personal protection at the CDC suggested that " that some of the features that have shown positive results are if the fabric is starched, and in addition to the stabilizer piece to mold it over the bridge of your nose….that having ‘ties’ coming off the top and bottom corners of the mask allows it to be tied up over the crown of your head and therefrom the top of the mask to pull and tie it below at the bottom of on your head. Any type of surgical mask is only 5% effective for protection for the wearer for airborne particles and that homemade cloth mask would be about the same. The real value of the masks would be to control secretions (nasal and oral) expelled by someone who is infected with the virus when they cough or sneeze." Also thank you Tom Phan for the information on the type of fabric needed: The FDA Class 1 Fabric is the best. CDC recommended last choice is the worst cotton for covid-19 ptotect based on lab results. (SmartAir March 2020) Best Medical Grade Material for mask 1. Hypoallergenic pillow case (69-90% against Covid-19) Certified FDA Class 1 Medical Device Breathable, Water & Blood Resistant 2. Parking garage attendants and security remain in place to promote safety.” Also good to know: “The Department of Public Works will continue curbside garbage and recycling pickup, and emptying neighborhood business district and parks refuse containers. Response to weather emergencies and forestry needs will be performed on an as-needed basis and employees at Public Works Divisions will be staffing skeleton crews only. Drop-off sites at the East End, Hazelwood and West End divisions have closed, as have recycling drop-offs at Construction Junction in North Point Breeze. (Recycling drop-offs are still available in the Strip District and Beltzhoover/Knoxville.)“

Hello neighbors. Wow so many requests! I am getting organized. Thanks Jill for dropping off fabric. i will make a few today to experiment with but am running out of elastic 1/4" flat. I am started making them with ties, takes more time but probably more comfortable. if you have any elastic or can buy some it would be welcome. i have some pale blue material which will look more "medical" if you need that style. Masks

Hello neighbors, If you are interesting in making masks please contact me directly at bhlarman(a)gmail.com. If you have tight woven fabric you could donate you could drop it off on my porch at 5900 Hampton Street where you would also pick up your portion of fabric to make masks and also to drop off the ones you made. I am thinking that local merchants, police officers and other non medical people need also to be protected. These fabric masks can be washed repeatedly. Might not be the best but at least it is some protection. Thank you all.
