HP Resident Bradford Mumpower Featured Artist in City Steps Project

Hi neighbors, You may have heard that a few non-profits, including Bike Pgh and the GPAC are sponsoring a series of four events across the city that celebrate artists and the Pittsburgh steps! One of those artists, is our very own Highland Park resident, Bradford Mumpower. Brad’s project is in Pittsburgh’s West End neighborhood, where he has been working with local groups to make an exciting day of activities. The culmination of the day is a fashion show, like Pittsburgh has never seen before, with six very talented and diverse designers. A new collection by Bradford will also be a part of this runway show. Often a Pittsburgh runway show happens on a stage or in a large room. This will be nothing like anything Pittsburgh has ever seen before, and the fashion community will be talking about it forever. If you’ve never seen a fashion show, or you love them, this is one to make sure you see! The day’s activities offer something for everyone and it is all free! Dear Neighbors The City of Pittsburgh offers special curbside collection days twice a year to promote environmentally-friendly disposal of your seasonal yard debris. Please check the collection schedule or visit PGH.ST to schedule reminders for upcoming dates. We will collect the following items curbside: Leaves Branches (4" diameter or less) Brush Grass Set-Out Items must be in paper bags weighing less than 35 pounds. No plastic bags! Bundle all branches with fiber twine or natural rope in lengths of 5 feet or less Set these items out at the curb at your regular collection spot before 6:00 a.m. on the morning of the collection day. Free plants

We’re about to start a renovation and I need to rehome some of my potted plants. They are still growing, but are in need of some tlc after a few hiccups with periods of over/under watering. I was trying to nurse them back to health, but now we need to reclaim the space. I have a large red chinese evergreen, a Moses in the cradle, and a spider plant along with several spider plant cuttings. All come in terra cotta pots and/or glass jars for some of the cuttings. Free to a good home! Pick up in Morningside.

*Published:* 09.26.2019 *Contact:* Cara Cruz Assistant Public Information Officer Public Safety 412-255-8615 cara.cruz(a)pittsburghpa.gov Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Awarded Fire Prevention Safety Funding to Serve the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired PITTSBURGH, PA (September 27, 2019) – The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire is pleased to announce it has been awarded more than $1 million in federal and civic funding to help equip the deaf and hearing-impaired with life-saving smoke and fire detection devices for their homes. FEMA will provide more than $950,000 through its Fire Prevention Safety Grants, while the City of Pittsburgh will contribute close to $50,000 for the two-year program. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire will work closely with the Center for Hearing and Deaf Services in Pittsburgh to identify local recipients who will receive the devices and learn how to use them. The specialized smoke and fire detectors will vary depending on individual needs. Some of the devices work in conjunction with audible smoke detectors to activate visual cues such as strobe lights. Others can be worn on the body as pager-type monitors that vibrate and alert people wherever they may be in the home. Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Chief Darryl Jones says the funding will go a long way toward protecting a population that is underserved when it comes to fire safety. “The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) states people who are deaf or have hearing impairments face unique challenges in an emergency. Their ability to detect a fire or escape its effects can be hindered by their impairments. As a result, they are at a greater risk of death or injury due to fire. The most pressing fire safety issue for people who are deaf or hard of hearing is whether they will be alerted to danger in time to escape. These specially-designed devices are expensive to buy and install in a home - much more so than the standard smoke detectors you'd find at a hardware store. Those with hearing impairments should not be prevented from protecting themselves and their families in the event of a fire simply because it is cost-prohibitive,” said Jones. Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Inspector / Fire Prevention Officer Lisa Epps will lead the training programs to teach recipients how to operate the safety equipment and install it in their homes.
