The bright red object low in the southern sky after midnight is not a star but the planet Mars. Mars is now in "opposition"—meaning that the Earth is between it and the Sun. It is also at "perihelion"—meaning it is closest to the Sun in its orbit. The combination makes Mars dazzlingly bright, four times brighter than the brightest star Sirius. In August, Mars will be visible earlier in the evening, and will still be very bright. Jupiter, not quite as bright, is in the same area of the sky a few hours earlier. Venus is the “Evening Star,” shining in the west right after dusk. A somewhat fainter Saturn is also visible, positioned between Jupiter and Mars. All the planets, along with Sun and Moon, travel along the celestial highway of the zodiac. This great circle in the sky, termed the "ecliptic", corresponds to the plane of our solar system. Note that planets show a steady light, while stars “twinkle” because their pinpoint glow is easily disturbed by currents in the air before it reaches our eyeballs.

Kitchen redo

Hi, I am interested in redoing my townhouse galley style kitchen by removing the non-load bearing wall between the dining room and kitchen, removing the wood paneling ☹ on the kitchen walls, removing a dropped ceiling and bulkhead, installing tile floor and tin ceiling, and venting the stove through chimney behind the walls. I have wanted to do this for 40 years, so hopefully I can get enough information to proceed. 1. Has anyone found any pros or cons price wise, etc. to having the cabinet vendor do the whole job including above list, or would it be a better idea to have a separate contractor do the demo and finish work before the cabinets are installed? 1. Any recommendations for contractors or companies that would do this kind of work? 1. Does anyone have any recommendations for a kitchen cabinet vendor that offers decent quality cabinets at a reasonably affordable price? Any cabinet vendors or brands to stay away from? 1. I would welcome any comments or suggestions regarding above and also regarding issues like length of time to complete job, timeliness, cleanliness, and showing up regularly to do the job. If you have time to offer your help and opinion, I certainly would appreciate it, I and thank you in advance for taking the time to respond. Seeking Recommendations for Allergist

Hi Neighbors, I am seeking recommendations for an allergist. I strongly suspect that I have allergies to common things such as pollens, dust, etc. but I also suspect that I have sensitivities to various foods, ingredients, additives, etc. If anyone has a recommendation for a good allergist that can test for all the common allergens as well as foods, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you have any recommendations regarding any doctors to avoid, I'd love to hear those as well. Thanks, Rob Nichols

We have attached a letter in regards to what they need, but most importantly it is FOOD at this time. Last month we took our Van Loaded, and it was so needed and so much appreciated. FOCUS Pittsburgh, located in the Hill District, is part of a national movement through the Orthodox Church, that helps to fight poverty in communities across America. One of their areas in need is keeping their food pantry stocked with food and supplies. Currently, their shelves are empty and they need help. The above attachment highlights what they need. It could change on a monthly basis, at which point that need will be communicated. FOCUS Pittsburgh has been in the Hill since 2011. Each week, hundreds of backpacks are distributed to children in the Hill and Southside Public Schools. They offer an 8-week professional development class that teaches non-technical job skills to promote employment and success in the workplace. Bag lunches are distributed every Saturday through the Churches....140 lunches to be exact. In 2014, they opened a free medical and behavioral health clinic for people who are uninsured or who don't qualify for medical assistance. Most recently, they have purchased an RV, trained dozen of volunteers, and have formed a trauma response team -- responding to homicides in Allegheny County by providing on-site psychological and mental health care to residents affected by violence. A 22 year-old female victim reported that she was pepper sprayed and assaulted by a group of known females. The females fled with the victim's cell phone and a black bag containing personal effects. The victim indicated that she knows the suspects and officers will obtain a warrant once positive identifications are made. (135164) 7/17/17 Theft from Vehicle - 7200 block Fleury Way, 6:00 PM. A MacBook Air was stolen from an unlocked vehicle. (136247) 7/18/18 Burglary - 7000 block Fleury Way. Victims reported that their home was broken into sometime during the day. Several televisions and a game system were taken. Neighbors reported hearing someone in the residence between 4:00 and 5:00 PM, but they assumed it was the residents. (137066) 7/18/18 Burglary - 6900 block Mt Vernon Street, 11:00 AM. A resident reported coming home to find that their house had been burglarized. The suspects moved the security camera and pushed a window air conditioner to gain entry. The suspects stole money and took the keys for two vehicles from the house. The cars were then taken as well. They are described as a 2006 gray Hyundai Tucson (PA plate KPE-4336), and a 2006 powder blue Audi A4 (PA plate KRJ-0153). (136672, 136785) 7/21/18 Aggravated Assault (Stabbing) - 7100 block Forest Way, 12:05 AM. The victim reported that they were walking with a friend and got into a verbal argument with an unknown male. The argument turned into a fight when the suspect, described as a black male, between 27 and 33 years of age, approximately 5"10' tall and 225 lbs, pulled out a switchblade and cut the victim on the arm. (138772) 7/21/18 Aggravated Assault (Shooting) - Race Street & North Homewood Avenue, 12:10 AM. Officers responded to a ShotSpotter Alert and discovered a victim who was struck by gunfire three times in the legs. The victim stated that they were walking on North Homewood Avenue when they observed a male in a black hoodie, heard gunfire, then realized they had been shot. The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition. (138794) Larimer / Lincoln-Lemington 7/17/18 Overdose - 7000 block Lemington Avenue. 1:45 PM. A 62 year-old female was found down on the ground, unresponsive. Narcan was administered and the female was taken to UPMC Shadyside for evaluation. (136008) 7/19/18 Aggravated Assault - 1500 block Lincoln Avenue, 1:00 AM. A victim came to the station to report that they were inside a business when they were attacked and struck in the head with a brick. There was no information about what precipitated the attack. Witnesses describe the suspect as a black male, approximately 5"9' tall, in his early 30's, with injuries to their fingers. (139913). 7/19/18 Aggravated Assault (Shooting) - 500 block Lowell Street - 4:08 PM. Officers responded to a report of a victim shot in the leg in the 500 Block of Lowell Street. The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition. During the investigation, officers were able to determine a vehicle description of the and shortly thereafter observed a vehicle matching the description in the area. Officers were able to stop and detain the vehicle occupants. It was discovered that the vehicle in question had been reported stolen earlier. This investigation is ongoing in regards to the shooting. (137634) 7/20/18 Stolen Car - 1500 block Westmoreland Street. The vehicle owner stated that they parked their 2009 white Acura MDX SUV, (PA Plate JBP-9863) overnight, and when they returned in the morning it was missing. (138882) 7/22/18 Theft from Vehicle - 6500 block Apple Avenue, 12:54 AM. The victim reported that his vehicle was broken into overnight. The victim watched their security camera and saw an unknown person enter their unlocked car at 12:54 AM, and go through the car. The person left and returned 10 minutes later with a flashlight and went through the entire car, taking an iPad. (139726) Bloomfield / Garfield / Friendship 7/15/18 Theft from Vehicle - 300 block S. Graham Street. A Glock model 17 pistol was stolen from an unlocked vehicle overnight. (134506) 7/17/18 Robbery - 4800 block Dearborn Street, 11:45 AM. A 56 year-old male victim told officers that an unknown suspect knocked on his door. The victim's mother answered and the suspect indicated that he was looking for the victim. The supect then pulled a 9mm pistol from his pants and told the victim to "give it up." The victim was able to slam the door shut on the suspect's arm at which point the suspect fled. The suspect was described as a black male, medium complexion, 18-21 years old, thin build, about 130 Lbs, clean shaven, with short hair. (135924) 7/18/18 Theft from Vehicle - 400 block S. Graham Street. Victim reported that someone rifled through his unlocked vehicle while it was parked on the street between 6:50 - 7:10 PM. (137035) 7/18/18 Theft from Vehicle - 4900 block Penn Avenue, 4:45 PM. A pair of RayBan sunglasses were stolen from an unlocked vehicle while the victim was at work. Security camera footage from a nearby business showed a group of males, approximately 14-17 years old, entering the victim's vehicle. The suspects were wearing backpacks and walked inbound on Penn after the theft. (136911). 7/18/18 Robbery - Stratford Avenue & Coral Street, 11:45 PM. A taxi driver reported that he was transporting (4) males on a trip when one of the males attempted to grab his wallet and flee. The driver was able to retain his wallet and the suspects all fled. (137160). 7/19/18 Stolen Vehicle - 200 Block North Evaline Street. A victim reported that their vehicle was stolen sometime overnight from the 4300 Block of Coleridge Street on 7-19-18. Later that afternoon, officers observed the car with multiple juveniles inside. The juveniles immediately fled when they saw the police. The unoccupied car then drifted into a garage, causing damage to the garage. 7/20/18 Stolen Car - 5200 block Gem Way. The victim reported that their car was taken sometime overnight. They had inadvertently left their key in the vehicle. The vehicle is a 2004 white Audi A4, (PA plate JHD-0667) (138164) East Liberty / Highland Park 7/15/18 Robbery - 6006 Broad Street (Boost Mobile), 4:55 PM. A store employee reported that an unknown male ran into the store carrying a silver gun and headed directly for the cash register. The male demanded all of the money and fled with an unknown amount of cash and cell phones. The suspect is a black male, 25-30 years old, 5'6," thin build, and may have had a tattoo near his left eye. (134740) 7/16/18 Theft from Vehicle - 5700 block Stanton Avenue. Victim returned to her vehicle to find driver's side window broken and her sunglasses missing. (135202) 7/17/18 Theft from Vehicle - Reservoir Drive (Highland Park). The victim parked her car in the park around 6:00 PM and returned around 7:00 PM to find her passenger side rear window shattered and her credit cards missing. Before the victim could cancel her credit cards, the suspect had already used one of them to purchase a $100.00 gift card at Panera in Oakland. (136246) 7/17/18 Overdose - 200 block Amber Street, 8:30 PM. A 39 year-old female overdosed in her basement. She was given Narcan and taken to West Penn Hospital in stable condition. (136302) 7/18/18 Theft from Vehicle - 7777 Lockway East. Victim is a city employee who parked his vehicle at the old asphalt plant. When he returned at the end of the day, his rear passenger window was shattered and there were pry marks along the door. Cash and credit cards were stolen. (136777) 7/20/18 Stolen Vehicle - 5400 block Broad Street. The victim reported that they parked their car two days ago, and discovered it missing. The victim still has the keys. The vehicle is described as a 2006 gold Pontiac G6 with paint damage to the front and a large scrape on the left side. Additionally, the vehicle is "very loud." (PA plate KPZ-2338). (138254) 7/21/18 Theft from Vehicle - 1000 Block North Negley Avenue, 4:15 AM. The victim reported they were unloading their car, making multiple trips between the car and residence, and left their car open while unloading. During a trip, they noticed a male fleeing and the car had been ransacked. A phone, iPad, and cash was taken. (138910) 7/21/18 Theft from Vehicle - 6700 Block Stanton Aveue (Highland Park), 11:00 AM. The victim stated that they parked their car while playing tennis in Highland Park and when they returned to their vehicle, the passenger side window was smashed out and their wallet was taken. (139081) Morningside / Stanton Heights / Waterworks 7/18/18 Stolen Vehicle - 1100 block Portland Street. The victim reported that their vehicle was stolen overnight. Officers later located the vehicle and detained the occupants, after learning that it had been used in a shooting in Larimer. (137471) 7/18/18 Theft from Vehicle - 4300 block Coleridge Street. The victim reported that their vehicle was ransacked overnight. There was no physical damage and the owner could not determine what was missing. (137394) 7/19/18 Theft from Vehicle - 1100 block Woodbine Street. The victim reported that their vehicle was ransacked sometime overnight. The interior was in disarray, with the glove box and center console open, and items strewn everywhere. Cash and a checkbook were stolen. (137329) 7/21/18 Theft from Vehicle - 900 block of Brintell Street. The victim reported that their car was ransacked overnight. Change and a flashlight were stolen. (139879) 7/22/18 Stolen Vehicle - 4700 block Coleridge Street. Victim returned home to discover their 2014 Hyundai Sonata was missing. The victim later observed their car in the area and called police. While they waited for police, they observed a black male, approximately 16-17 years old, 5'8" tall, 150 lbs, wearing black shorts and a gray t-shirt get out and flee from from the car. Farrar, 27, of McKeesport Arrestee 2: Ameeka J. Davis, 22, of McKeesport Summary: Zone 5 plainclothes officers were patrolling the East Hills area when the conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. The vehicle windows were heavily tinted and the license plate had a cover that obscured the officers from being able to see the full licence plate. Officers attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle continued to proceed at a slow speed for several seconds. When officers finally approached the driver, they were met with an overwhelming odor of burning marijuana. A search of the vehicle yielded: a loaded Glock model 27 pistol, a loaded Taurus 9mm pistol, oxycodone, marijuana, and a large quantity of cash. Both occupants were arrested. (135377) 7/21/18 6:30 PM Bennett Street & Neuman Way Arrestee: Jajuan Golden, 32, of Baldwin Summary: Officers stopped to offer assistance to a motorist with a flat tire. While checking on the occupants, the officers discovered that the car was reported stolen. Officers arrested the drive (Golden) for possessing a stolen car, and the passenger was arrested on an unrelated warrant. (139400) 7/19/18 3:30 PM 7200 Block of Frankstown Avenue Arrestee: Robert Williams, 22, of Homewood Summary: Due to numerous community complaints of open-air drug use and sales, officers have been focusing on the intersection of Frankstown Avenue & North Homewood Avenue. Officers observed a drug transaction and subsequently arrested WIlliams for delivering illegal narcotics. 7/18/18 8:00 PM 4000 Block of Howley Street Arrestee: Edward Stewart, 25, of Glenshaw Summary: Pittsburgh Police Narcotics detectives arrested Steward for selling illegal narcotics, following an undercover drug investigation.
