Hello neighbors, Does anyone have a simple photo booth setup and/or polaroid camera that I can borrow for 3 hours on March 24th? Also, my 5 year old loves ABBA -- anybody want to part with an old vinyl or CD? I can't bring myself to buy the items new since she's still learning how to treat them well. However, I will note that her much-loved Grease and Sinead O'Connor vinyls are still fully functional after a year of hard playing. The Run-DMC record, not so much -- probably for the best from an emerging vocabulary perspective. =| Thanks in advance! Leah

Where is the 18th district?

Thanks to all who have responded to my query about the special election today. It's confusing because we Highland Parkers live in the 14th district, but will be included in the 18th when the map is redrawn for future elections. That is why some maps showing the 18th district on line show HP within that district. I hope that we will be celebrating Conor Lamb's success by day's end. Best regards, Kimberly

Asparagus crowns for sale

Long post with lotsa info. If you have absolutely NO interest in purchasing ASPARAGUS, feel free to ignore. I'm going order 2-year old crowns asparagus on Sunday (18th). If anyone is interested in piggy-backing, I'm asking $2/crown. Descriptions of available varieties are below. I'll only order a variety if the total number of crowns requested is 25 or more (minimum order per grower). If I don't get enough requests for a variety you wanted, I will contact you. Since the crowns are 2 years old, you can Harvest *very* sparingly this year, moderately next and then fully in the third year. (2-3 years earlier than with the crowns usually sold). GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ASPARAGUS: Planting time: as soon as soil can be worked (in a couple/few weeks) Soil: deeply worked, fertile, well-draining. Hardiness Zone: 3-9 Sun Exposure: Sun to partial shade Growth Rate: Moderate Planting distance between crowns: 12", officially, but I did that 2 years ago and it's pretty sparse. I've seen them spaced as close as 4"-5" with no problems IMPORTANT NOTE: Asparagus plants branch and can grow to 4'-12'. You can clip some of this, but if you cut to the ground before it turns brown, crowns will weaken and stop producing. PURPLE VARIETIES: Sweet Purple (Open-pollinated. Spears 6"-9" high. Thicker, 20% more sugar than green varieties. Stringless, tender, less fiber. Mild, nutty, sweet; stalks turn green when cooked.) Purple Passion (Rich color, record yields; larger, more tender, sweeter, tastier spears than green types; stalks turn green when cooked.) GREEN VARIETIES: Mondeo (Delicious, versatile, heavy producer. All-male. Excellent flavor, good disease resistance.) Millennium (Predominately male. High quality, tolerant to hard winters. Rust resistant, good in heavy to medium soils. Named ‘Seed of the Year’ in 2005 at Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.) Porthos/NJ1025 (All male F1 hybrid. Performs 30% better than industry standard. Strong disease resistance.) Greenox NJ1122 (Hybrid. New release from Rutgers. All-male. Tips stay tight even in hot weather. Rust and Fusairum resistance.) Sequoia/NJ1113 (Hybrid. All-male. Trials from Rutgers show Sequoia to yield 30% more than Jersey Giant! Very resistant to Rust.) Viking KB-3 (Hybrid. Very Hardy, Rust Resistant, Good Yield.) Just let me know by Saturday night which varieties you want, and how many crowns of each. Payment due on receipt (2-3 weeks). I can take checks, cash or major credit cards.
