Thanksgiving potluck

Hi, neighbors, We would like to reach out to those of you who may have nowhere to go this Thanksgiving. Perhaps you have no family here or cannot get home this year. I like to include anyone who has nowhere else to go as Marty and I have been there many times. We are hosting a Thanksgiving potluck on Thursday November 23, 2017 at 6:00 pm. The potluck will have a mixture of interesting non-traditional as well as traditional Thanksgiving food. So we'd like to coordinate what everyone is bringing so that all bases are covered. We’ll make a turkey breast. Our philosophy about Thanksgiving: It's a time to be thankful for all of your blessings, including all of the people in your life. We'll eat as soon as everyone arrives (after taking a few minutes to share what we are thankful for) and then I’d like to play some games after dinner with those who wish to stay. If you are interested, please RSVP (yes or maybe) so we will know how many to expect. If you are unsure, please RSVP maybe and tell us your final decision later. Thanks! Free Israel/Palestine Peace event

Neighbors – Happy Sunday from your friendly Continuing Education director! One of the recurring themes in conversations I have at work and among colleagues is this: how can we attend to the challenging work of honest and mindful relationship across difference – especially differences that seem incommensurable? We are hosting an event at the Seminary this week that will provide you with an astonishing example of this hard and crucial work. Roots / Shorashim / Judur is an Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative co-founded by an Israeli settler in the West Bank - orthodox Jewish rabbi Hanan Schlesinger - and Khaled Abu Awwad, a Muslim Palestinian. If there is anything close to irreconcilable difference in the world today, it is between the Israeli settler and the Muslim Palestinian. Yet these visionary men see it as their call to build peace from the ground up and knit the kinds of relationships necessary that might make peace and a two-state solution possible. https://www.friendsofroots.net/index/ I met them when in Israel/Palestine this summer and began the work to bring them here. I am delighted that we are able to. The two joining us Weds, Oct 25, will be Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger, one of the founders, and Antwan Saca, one of the Roots activists and a Christian Palestinian. https://www.pts.edu/root-of-peace-2017 You might find yourself strongly aligned with one side of the conflict over the other. You might find yourself “agnostic” or inquiring. Either way, what I promise you is not an answer to the problem that comes in the form of a proposition – but an encounter with a remarkable and paradigm-shifting conversation. The truth, these activists have found, is not in positions but in relationships. And that, dear neighbors, is reason for hope. Plumber?

I have the original Rudd continuous feed water heater from when my house was built (1928!). It’s a beautiful thing—ornate cast iron with a series of copper coils through which the water flows and is heated. Most of the time it works great but every now and then it seems as though the water doesn’t circulate. Even though the pilot is lit, we have no hot water. The problem inevitably fixes itself in short order but I’m concerned that it might need some servicing (hasn’t had any in the 3 years I’ve lived here). I need a plumber who understands old things. I do not want to replace it unless absolutely necessary. Any suggestions of who to call appreciated. Elisabeth

Looking for a sound person

Our volunteer vocal group would love to find a sound person (especially one with her/his own equipment) to help us particularly at outdoor events where the three of us don’t carry well in an open setting. Where the venue already has a sound system, it has been our experience that these venues assign amateurs to set us up. They don’t really understand what needs to be done to blend us and get a good balance with the prerecorded accompaniment and then they leave after setting it up and are not around when problems arise. Someone who could set things up for us, do a sound check, and adjust things as needed would be greatly appreciated! We would prefer a volunteer, but occasionally a SMALL stipend could be arranged. We generally are not paid at these events, but if we are, we would share some of that with you. This is for someone who wants to be involved in a musical group for fun and camaraderie rather than primarily for money. Hope someone is out there that would fill the bill.
