Gardening Classes

Hello, everyone! A great way to push away those winter blues is to start planning for your garden! In the spirit of that, I've decided that gardening classes might be just what everyone needs! Before I put a ton of effort and money into it, I wanted to assess how many folks would be interested in just such a venture. I'm going to call it "From Planning to Canning: Step-by-Step Gardening." It would be a weekly class, likely on an evening. Probably 1.5-2 hours each. There will be some discussion/information in each session, and then a hands-on component in most of them. My qualifications: I have a diploma in horticulture. I have worked as a landscaper (had my own business for 5 years and still do consults), greenhouse technician (7 years), horticulture instructor in an adult program (7 years), grow almost all of my own seedlings (12 years now, since we purchased a home). Classes would be $10 each, plus any supplies for the specific week (a soil test kit, for example). Supplies will NEVER be exorbitant! Folks would be welcome to attend individual classes or the entire series, with discounts for purchase/attendance to multiple classes or the whole series. (I don't know how much yet, but at least 10%). Free classes to those on welfare, food stamps, a fixed income, etc. 10% discount if you are a member of a local garden club (Highland Park Garden Club Membership is only $15/year!) Topics would include (but are not limited to): * Assessing Your Yard * Testing Your Soil * Environmentally-Conscious Gardening (composting, rain barrels, rain gardens) * Planning Your Garden * Planting Seeds * Purchasing seedlings & other plants (what to look for and what to avoid) * Transplanting * Trees, Shrubs & Berries * Maintenance (pruning, fertilization, irrigation, etc.) * Pest & Weed control (environmentally-sound methods) * Harvesting * Recipes (with demos if possible!) * Canning (also with demos if possible!) * Fall Planting * Putting Your Garden to Bed for the Winter * Much more! There would likely be a discount on seeds, plants, etc. because we could purchase as a group. Anything you plant is yours, and if you purchase seedlings from me in the spring you will get a 10% discount for each class you attend, up to 50%!
