HP Garden Club Meeting News

The Highland Park Garden Club (HPGC) met Saturday at the Union Project and thought that the community would be interested in to hear about it. Here's a summary. After a very brief business section, Jill Traub gave a very interesting presentation about the history of the naming of the "Forsythia". This history was an example of one of the many interesting stories of plant history from a book, "100 Flowers and How They Got Their Names". She told us about the fascinating story of the man who gave his name to the Forsythia plant which is currently in bloom all over the area. It was suggested and she kindly agreed to present other examples at future meetings. Then the club's horticulturist Rachel Kudrick generously brought in a bunch of seedlings she had grown. They consisted of various types of heirloom tomatoes and bell peppers plus packets of seeds of various other vegetables for the members to take home. She conducted a hands-on seminar on how to transplant and care for these for summer gardens. All of the members present were able to plant the veggies of their choice into small pots to take home and for eventual transplanting into their yards. Finally, President Elisabeth Larman displayed and discussed a set of four "Fairy Gardens" that she had constructed based upon what she had learned at a class at Michael's Nursery earlier in the week. Fairy gardens are bonsai-like groupings of plants, specifically, things like small boxwood that can be trimmed to look like full trees along with small herbs and mosses creating lovely "gardens." Some had the addition of little arbors, bridges, "mirror" ponds, stones, etc. See attached photos of the examples. She commented that these small gardens would be a perfect gift for someone who is not able to garden but can tend a dish garden of this kind. After the meeting, several members stayed on and volunteered to stencil identifying labels on the aprons to be used by members during plant sales and work sessions. It was an interesting and fun meeting. The HPGC meets monthly on the 3rd Saturday at 10 am at the Union Project at Stanton and Negley during the summer months. Hey all, we changed our water filter system and have a used Smart Water Reverse Osmosis system by GE, it's about 8 years old and you can get new filters at Home Depot. You need to be pretty handy or get a plumber to install. It worked beautifully and we regularly had neighbor children stopping in for some of our awesome RO water. It comes with a spigot and 3 gallon pressure tank but may need some new water lines and definitely new filters. Nicole carlin5707(a)gmail.com

Beware Top Notch contracting

Owner's name is Derek...I got his name from someone on the listserv...he installed a new roof on my house but failed to let me know my gutters were shot, and I had to point out nails left in my new roof and roofing debris that filled my gutters, that I could see from the dormers... and I had huge leaks AFTER the roof was installed, with alot of inside damage. He also left a HEAVY trash can full of shingles and slate that I ended up having to empty into bags myself and put out for trash. He also installed vinyl siding on the back of the house, which I have discovered was installed incorrectly and very cheaply. I had to replace a window after the gutter leaks, and in the course of this work, done by an excellent contractor, we found that there was no vapor barrier, no insulation, nothing underneath the siding, and the trim/J-channel looks terrible....just a crappy job altogether. Since it is probably expensive, useless and tedious to try to go after him in court, I want to at least let as many folks know as possible what a shyster this man is. (And that's not the word I really want to use) His estimates were the lowest and he came with a good recommendation from this forum, but it's true...you get what you pay for. Now I just wonder how long it will take for my roof to fail...

(Highland Park) Are you missing a brown dog?

There is currently (12 noon Saturday) a short-haired medium brown (maybe beagle?) dog in the woods between Jackson and Stanton Ave. at 6507 Stanton, digging for critters it looks like. More approachable from Stanton, and you are welcome to go through our yard (6505 Stanton Ave.) if it helps. The hill is very steep, though. Mary Barr 412-513-9228
