*The Ultimate Play Day is on Sunday, April 26 from 1-4pm at Burgwin Park in Hazelwood.* It is super easy to get to...and will be home to the newest spray park in Pittsburgh this summer. Come check out the event! It is a day of play for people of all ages. We have about 20 different activities hosted by organizations who have come together to raise awareness about the importance in the healthy development of children, families, communities. Organizations like: SLB Radio, Carnegie Museum of Art, Children's Museum, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Student Conservation Assoc., PAEYC, Citiparks, drumming (Pitt students), and more. There will be fruit, water, smiley cookies, etc. City Council members & our County Executive will be joining us. Seriously folks...come out this Sunday. Oh, and it's FREE! BURGH BEES Apiary Work Day Many Hands Make Light Work It's time to tidy up the Community Apiary! We will be having a work day at the Homewood Apiary on Saturday, April 25 from 9am until around 3pm. Come for an hour or two (or three or four). The Burgh Bees Commuity Apiary is located in the 6900 Block of Susquehanna St. This is your chance to play in the garden and get your hands dirty. No worries if you've never helped helpers of all abilities are welcome and be sure we will find a good task for you. The areas of focus will be the following: 1. Re-mow to establish the no-mow zones. If this could be done prior to the workday it helps to give volunteers the visual clues as to the layout and work spaces of the Apiary 2. Clear winter debris along the fence, in the rain garden and in the meadow 3. Garden Lovers - those with garden knowledge to clean out/oversee the prep of the raised garden beds and the beds on either side of the apiary - the lavender in the front raised bed may need trimmed - and the herb beds will need attending to as well. 4. Weed-whack inside the apiary to make this space presentable and cleaning out and filling up the water tubs 5. Clear out the weeds first and then Re-mulch the path and the areas around the trees 6. Attend to the trees. The Apple Tree will need the suckers knocked off and the others will just need to be attended to for addressing any winter damage and for shaping. 7. We will have several Graduates from the Penn State Master Gardner¹s supporting us in the clean-up, so those with some experience will have an opportunity to learn even more about our native plants and trees during the clean up. Please bring tools for weeding (shovels, trowels, hand rakes), spreading mulch (garden rake), wheelbarrow, clippers, gloves, etc. Lawnmowers are welcome! Bring snacks/refreshments to share. Free Raspberry and Phlox Plants

I was digging out some plants that spread too far and now they are awaiting a new home. I have 2 buckets on my front steps with plants for the taking. The larger bucket has red raspberry plants in it. They are mostly small young plants, so will probably not produce this spring. But they may produce in the Fall. I get berries around May/June and September/October. There are some older plants in there too, with stiff dark stems. Those ones may produce more quickly than the newer plants. These plants spread by underground runners, so you have to keep an eye on them and dig them up as needed. The phlox (at least I think that is what it is) gets about 3 feet tall with pinkish/purplish flowers late in the Summer. They are in the smaller bucket. These plants seem to need regular water, as when they start to get dry they start to sag. But water them and they come right back to life. They spread a little too, as they form a large bunch and go out a little from there. Feel free to take what you want, but please leave the buckets. We are moving to Houston this summer, and will be selling our house. We are so sad to be leaving such a terrific neighborhood!
