HPCC Love Your Home Renovation Fair: Project # 3 Victorian Renovation

The Highland Park Community Council (HPCC) is planning our first ever homeowner resource fair, Love Your Home, this Saturday, 2/21/15. HPCC’s goal for the event is to help educate our community at large on home improvements, general home maintenance, navigating city processes and innovative approaches to enhancing the value of our homes. This event is FREE to all Highland Park residents and we invite all to attend. In connection with the event, we have created a series of homeowner renovation stories, including before and after photos of each project. Please visit us at the fair to learn more about what your neighbors have done to renovate their homes. Project # 3: Old Victorian Home Gets New LifeChallenge: When the house was purchased in 2012, it was split into three poorly-maintained rental units. The homeowners immediately began renovations, tearing out drop ceilings and wood paneling to reveal hidden pocket doors, original moldings, and eleven-foot ceilings. The first floor kitchen was located in a small addition with no heat and a rotting exterior wall.Solution: The homeowners re-imagined the first floor layout, removed a wall and installed a new kitchen in the main living area. A vintage Tappan stove and repurposed butcher block countertops paired with stainless steel appliances and timeless cabinets unites a modern feeling with the houses original details. In addition to the kitchen, the homeowners have had to tackle rebuilding box-gutters, replacing cedar siding, and updating plumbing and electrical in their effort to restore the integrity of the house. Dear Neighbors Last fall I had the opportunity to attend the Pittsburgh Civil Leadership Academy, It was a wonderful experience . Mayor William Peduto announced today that applications are open for the Spring 2015. The Academy gives participants an opportunity to interact one-on-one with city department directors and staff members through tours, interactive presentations, and hands-on demonstrations. Program topics include city planning, urban redevelopment, public works, park services, protection of our waterways and rivers, public safety and more. To date, the City has held eleven classes with nearly 200 graduates.
