Dear Highland Park, Time to get out your broom sticks and old bed sheets. Mulberries have arrived and are ready to be harvested. Please consider sharing your harvesting experience with Hidden Harvest Pittsburgh. For the next few weeks Hidden Harvest Pittsburgh is asking for your help in figuring out just how big the Highland Park "mulberry patch/orchard" is. We invite you to share your harvesting efforts with the rest of the community by emailing us a group "selfie" and telling us, in weight or volume, how much you were able gather. Email us your photos and harvest weight or volume to hiddenharvestpgh(a)gmail.com. Please let us know if it's okay to post your photo to the Hidden Harvest Website: http://www.hiddenharvestpgh.org Harvesting mulberries is a cinch - simply lay an old sheet on the ground around the tree. Then tap the branches with a broom stick. The berries will come pouring down. Wash the berries in a solution of 1 quart tap water and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar a few times to remove any impurities and insects. Final rinse should be water only. Removing the stems is a matter of personal preference. Once clean, here are a few ways to use the berries: 1. Eat 'em fresh. 2. Freeze 'em! Wash berries, lay them on a baking pan in a single layer, and place them in the freezer for 2 hours. Once frozen, put them in freezer bags for later in smoothies and baked goods. 3. Bake 'em straight into mulberry pies. Purchase pies shells, or make them from scratch.
