Massage and Working Through Trauma Late last Spring a dear friend of mine died very suddenly and very tragically. That whole week I felt like I was walking through a haze that was supposed to be my life. I could hardly talk to anyone let alone see clients and my body and mind were at war with one another. I was experiencing emotional trauma. I also understood what my body needed enough to seek out two massage therapist friends and I received two massages that week. When I went in and they asked me what I needed from each massage, my response was the same for both: "I need to go to that happy place where massage can take you." What I was saying was actually, "I need to be taken away from my body for a bit." Both of them, fortunately, understood and I was able to relax deeply and basically 'go away' into a deep and meditative state. And when I came out of the massages, I was still sad, but I definitely felt more grounded and better able to take care of what I needed to as a mother and business owner. Recently I've seen a couple of clients who have been in the midst of sudden and traumatic events in their lives. First of all, I applaud them for having the wherewithal during a crisis to seek out what they needed. And second, they were willing to allow their bodies to go into that deep state of relaxation that is so healthy and so necessary when dealing with trauma....or sometimes just the stresses of life in general. Massage can be extremely helpful in releasing emotional trauma that has been in ones body for a long time and it can also help release the stress of an immediate traumatic situation and experience. I feel honored to work with these people who seek out massage and understand the healing benefits of this modality that go beyond fixing a crick in the neck. [Highland Park] Empty Bowls Dinner

If you are looking for a way to warm up on a cold winter weekend, I have a suggestion: the 19th Annual Empty Bowls Dinner on March 2 at Rodef Shalom Congregation, 4905 Fifth Avenue in Oakland. This is a fantastic event that is a fundraiser for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Just Harvest, two organizations that provide food assistance to those in our region who are struggling to feed themselves and their families. Anyone can end up at a food pantry - job loss, medical crisis, or disaster sends many people who never imagined themselves needing help. Empty Bowls is a simple meal of soup and bread, intended to remind us that many of our neighbors cannot fill their own "bowls" - and these people live in Highland Park and every corner of our region. Most are working, low-income people, veterans and seniors. All proceeds from Empty Bowls goes to the Food Bank and Just Harvest. The soups are superb - all different kinds, made and donated by the city's best chefs and restaurants. You can go back for more! There are celebrity soup servers, including the mayor and TV personalities. There are ceramic bowls signed by celebrities, such as Billy Joel, Martin Sheen and many members of our sports teams, for auction. There's a bake sale, coffee and espresso bar, and strolling musicians. Your $20 ticket also includes a handcrafted ceramic bowl, that you get to choose from among 1200 on display. The bowls are made and donated by artists, potters, art students and high school students. The bowls are gorgeous and each is unique. It's a fun afternoon, and it's also meaningful and educational. Kids are welcome - there's a kids activity center. You can have fun and teach your kids about giving. March 2, from 2 to 6 p.m. You can get tickets at the door or buy them at www.pittsburghfoodbank.org It will warm your stomach and your heart. Thanks, Nancy
