Fellow neighbors, Please see the following message from the Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN) regarding their "Love They Neighbor" campaign: Hello friends, As you probably know, here in Pittsburgh we are engaged in a struggle with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) our region's largest employer and one of the most elite hospital systems in the country. UPMC has thousands of service workers and low-level employees who are paid poverty level wages and worse, offered terrible health care coverage for themselves and their families. Currently, the service workers are attempting to organize themselves for the possibility of collective bargaining and have been met with a viscous and long-term campaign of harassment by UPMC management. Additionally, UPMC enjoys non-profit charity exempt status on most of it's operations and property. Their actions however, and the multi-million dollar salaries of their executives, have been compared to those of a Fortune 500 company. Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN) is working with SEIU as well as other labor and community groups on a large scale campaign to show public support for the workers of UPMC and to make it clear that the behavior of our largest employer has to change. Winning this campaign could set positive precedents that ripple across the country both in terms of workers rights and holding our largest corporations accountable. PIIN is calling this campaign "Love Thy Neighbor," reflecting the deepest values of our faith traditions.
