The Legacy Arts Project is hosting the 8th Annual Keepers of the Flame Awards Ceremony and Gala Saturday, 2 November at Hosanna House, 807 Wallace Avenue, Wilkinsburg. Tickets for VIP reception, wine bar, and silent auction at 6 p.m. and performance are $35. Tickets for performance only at 8 p.m. are $20. The performance dramatizes Pittsburgh's Underground Railroad history through dance, drumming, and poetry. This year the honorees are Tina Brewer, Betty Lane, Saihou Njie, Alice Pittrell, K. Mensah Wali, and Highland Park's own Mama Kadiatou Conte-Forte. Guest Artistic Director is Kwame Ross, whose work is influenced by Haiti, Cuba, and Brazil. The format will be appropriate for dances and drummers of all ages! During his sixteen year association as first student then protege of Mohamed Kemoko Sano, choreographer and artistic director of both national companies, Djoliba and Les Ballets Africains, plus founder and director of Les Merveilles d'Afrique,Yamoussa had the distinction of being the youngest lead drummer in Les Ballets Africains. While with the national companies he toured Europe, Africa and the United States. His drum is featured on the CD's Master's of the Forest, Diya, Eh Allah, and both CD and video of Les Ballets Africains’ performance in England. In 1995, Yamoussa immigrated to the United States. Since that time he has performed with numerous companies, including Wosa of Washington D.C. on their Taiwan Tour, an eclectic group of artists at S.O.B.™s in New York City, and a jazz ensemble in New Haven, CT. He taught drum and dance at Yale University for 10 years and has traveled the U.S. teaching, performing, choreographing and polishing presentations for various dance ensembles. Yamoussa currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA where he teaches dance at Carnegie Mellon University and drumming at the Irma Freeman Center for Imagination, He also teaches drum and dance workshops for children and adults, and performs with various ensembles in addition to his own ensemble Camara Drum and Dance. [Highland Park] Asking for furniture

Hello neighbors! I work as a service coordinator at a senior high rise in the area. We have a resident moving into the building who has absolutely no furniture other than a television and microwave. The individual is very low income so if you have any furniture that you would be willing to donate or part with at a minimal cost, we would be very appreciative! The most crucial needs would be either a bed or couch for him to sleep on and shower chair, but again he has no furniture at all so anything would be great. He is not picky about wear and tear and has a vehicle to pick up the item. Thanks for your consideration- anything would be a big help! Katelyn Fisher
