Music in Pittsburgh! This evening, Friday, October 18, at 8 p.m., the 16th Annual St. Andrew's Lecture. Featured Speaker: Mr. Jim Cunningham, Artistic Director of WQED-FM, Host of the Morning Show and of the syndicated Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra radio broadcasts. Joining Jim will be members of the Cobalt Quartet, who will participate musically, and we'll see some video from the recent PSO European Tour. A reminder that the St. Andrew's Lecture is a free event! Sunday morning, at the 10 a.m. "Coffee and Conversation" hour between the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services, have a cup of coffee and a cookie and join us in the circle to hear Kathy Clark talk about the Food Resource Bank. The Food Resource Bank assists farmers in the United States to connect with farmers around the world to help make a difference in meeting the needs of the hungry. Choral Evensong and Sermon: Sunday, October 20, 4:30 p.m. The traditional Anglican Choral Service of Evensong, sung by our Schola Cantorum. Our preacher will be the Rev. David Gleason, Senior Pastor Emeritus of the First Lutheran Church of downtown Pittsburgh.

I'm glad to see buzz on the list about how our community members can be proactive regarding crime prevention. In my opinion, we are fortunate to be in Zone 5 where we have an excellent officer responsible for community relations, Officer Gay. I'd encourage anyone interested in this topic of crime and prevention/ awareness to attend the monthly Zone 5 Public Safety meetings. The last one was Oct 8. Officer Gay is there, and often the Commander as well, and most importantly it is a clearing house for ideas, networking and actions to make our communities safer. In my opinion, crime stats can be useful with explanation. At the public safety meeting, these are distributed each month and there is a chance to ask questions about them. VERY USEFUL! Stats, like any numbers can be interpreted in different ways. Sometimes some context helps. There is also a city-wide public safety meeting coming up next week. I will locate the email and FWD the details to the list. There are materials available for forming and MAINTAINING Block Watch groups. I meant to locate them and promote via this list yesterday but ran out of time. Block Watches work along with other safe community tools when they are ONGOING and a way of life, not just a reaction/ response. Having community members who care, as we do is a great beginning.
