I wanted to clarify the following points to my previous e-mail: - The Zoning Hearing for 226 N Negley Avenue is at 9:50 AM on July 19, 2012 at 200 Ross Street, downtown. Parking is available immediately behind 200 Ross Street. - The Zoning Board of Adjustment does not accept letters as testimony. It is important for you to attend the zoning hearing if you want to present testimony either for or against the proposed use change. - If you choose to send a letter, we will present your letter to the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Though the letter will not have the force of testimony, if you are not able to attend the zoning hearing, it is still important to show the community's opinion on this matter. - I attached a form letter for any who want to send a form letter. It is attached here as well. [Highland Park] Sunoco Part II

Dear Highland Park List Serv, I wanted to make you aware of a zoning hearing on Negley Avenue. The owners of 226 N Negley Avenue have requested a 'change in use' variance for the former Hollisters Garage at 226 N Negley from its current use as a garage into a convenience store. The current use of the site is RM - M, which stands for Residential, Multi-Unit, Moderate Density, meaning low-rise apartments with ample setbacks for green-space and trees. The proposed use is to 'retail sales and service with 6 parking spots,' which is a convenience store. We're all aware of the problems at the Sunoco convenience store in the 200 block of Negley Avenue. I believe that this property could foster similar problems, serving as a magnet for crime and disorder on Negley Avenue. We've made a great deal of progress quieting down this part of our neighborhood. The construction of the handsome apartments at the corner of Negley and Penn, and ELDI's investments in apartments along the 300 block of Negley, have contributed to a drop in crime and an increase in investment in and around this section of the neighborhood. We've seen investments in new market-rate apartment units, condos, and single family homes spring up close by. 226 N Negley's conversion into a convenience store could represent a significant setback to those efforts, especially if it witnesses similar problems to those that have occurred at the Sunoco across the street. Darren Belajac from East Liberty Development (ELDI) will be representing ELDI at the zoning hearing. - If you are able to attend the zoning hearing, we would appreciate your support. Your presence is by far the most effective means to representing your opinion. - If you are not able to attend, but would want to submit a letter representing your opinion to the Zoning Board of Adjustment, please feel free to send your letters to Darren Belajac, who will present your letters to the Zoning Board on your behalf. [Highland Park] RSVP for the Zone 5 Public Safety Council visit to the 911 Center

The Zone 5 Citizens Public Safety Council meets monthly to discuss public safety concerns in the zone. Meetings are typically held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Union Project. However, the July meeting will take place at the Allegheny County 911 Communications Center. Please find details of this special meeting below and don't forget to RSVP. Zone 5 Citizens Public Safety Council visits the 911 Center Tuesday, July 10 7:00pm - 8:30pm (approx) 400 N. Lexington Street, North Point Breeze * You will enter through the security area. Please sign in and someone will give you directions. Please RSVP to Zone5CitizensPSC(a)gmail.com by Sunday, July 8th at 9pm so that the 911 Center can prepare appropriately. Hello neighbors, A while ago a list of companies dealing with pruning or taking down trees was on the list serv. I would like to let you know of my experience with Treemasters, Corp. which we picked from the list. The owner (who lives in Highland Park) Brett Czarnecki and his crew did a FABULOUS job and were very reasonable.They removed an overgrown spruce which was between two houses and amazingly trimmed very tall trees. Everything was done extremely well and they left the garden raked and clean from debris. I highly recommend Treemasters, Corp. for all your tree trimming and removals. [Highland Park] JULY 4 KIDS' PARADE REMINDER

The Highland Park Community Council Kids' Committee is hosting its annual 4th of July Parade. Kids of all ages are invited to decorate their bicycle and then show off their handy work with a parade around the fountain. When: July 4 at 10 a.m. to noon Where: Highland Park -- meet near the fountain Supplies to decorate bikes, tricycles, wagons and anything else on wheels will be provided, as well as balloons and snacks.
