One of the Amish farmer that he works with was killed by a lightning strike.  It was a freak accident. Her name was Mary Yoder and she was also pregnant.   So very sad.  http://www.wjactv.com/news/news/pregnant-amish-woman-struck-killed-lightnin… So he is not sure exacly what items he will be getting this week.  He said he would expect items similar to last week plus he expected to have watermellons and other mellons.  Other items should include sweet corn, zucchini, yellow squash, pickle cucumbers, radishes, green onions, peaches, lettuce, swiss chard, blueberries.  Check out their fresh cut herbs such as chives and mint.  In addition they will have locally grown eggs and their normal selection of Amish made products. Sweet corn from McElhaney farm.  In the fruit department- local blueberries and blackberries- watermellons, musk mellons, and Chambersburg peaches.  California Olive Oil Connection This is the time of year that I really love olive oil because it goes so well with all these locally grown veggies.  I like to use ths spicier oils raw poured on slads and blanched vegetables.  I also like to roast all sorts of veggies (including onions and garlic) drizzled with lots of olive oil.  We have six varieties of California grown, certified extra virgnin olive oil available.  This is the real thing, not the fake, adulterated stuff. The Greek Gourmet- will have homemade spinach and meat pies to the market each week- in addition to 20+ flavors of hummus.  Stop by and talk to Jack at the booth. Dear neighbors, I am overwhelmed with the incredible number of caring people in our neighborhood and the great number of people who obviously are in need of food help in our neighborhood and that are served by just a few organizations. I am new to the community. Most responders mentioned the food programs at the East Liberty Presbyterian Church. What I failed to mention is that the bakery will not provide delivery service. They will donate the food but it will need to be picked up daily before they close. The name of the bakery is "La Gourmandine at www.lagourmandinebakery.com. They are on Butler street, very close by Highland Park. Their phone number is 412-682.2210. They are very generous and eager to help out. Hi, We just wanted to let everyone know that we have had a magazine sales person on DeVictor Place today. He was was nice but asked my husband all kinds of strange questions about neighbors, etc. and seemed to be fishing for names. He was from Los Angeles. After researching the topic of "Door to door magazine sales" a little, we came across the following article http://listofscams.blogspot.com/2010/01/door-to-door-magazine-sales-scams-t… We are not sure how accurate this is but thought we would let everyone know to be on the watch-out and extra careful with volunteering information on neighbors, and answering doors, etc. We also found the following tips from the Better Business Bureau: The BBB offers the following advice to avoid getting scammed by door-to-door magazine sales. • Do not open your door to strangers. Instead, say through the door that you are not interested, and ask them to leave. • Do not purchase magazines from door-to-door sales people because you will probably not receive the magazines. • Do not give money to door-to-door solicitors, unless you know you are giving to local kids for local causes. • If you feel threatened by any door-to-door sales representative, call 911. • Check businesses out at www.bbb.org before making a purchase. Hello neighbors! We have a first floor apartment for rent, beginning Sept. 1st. Rent is $950.00 plus electric per month. We pay for gas and water. Very nice 2 bedroom apt - spacious, clean, and renovated in 2010. Close to bus lines on Highland and Negley, allowing ready access to Oakland and other East End neighborhoods. First floor of Victorian house has 10’ ceilings and 6’ windows. Lots of light. Built-in bookcases in LR and lovely mantels in the LR and DR. Fireplaces are non-functional. Gas heat and central AC, w/w in LR, DR, hall, & BRs with tile floors at entry and in kitchen and bath. Kitchen is small, but has good cabinet space. Refrigerator and self-cleaning gas range are fairly new, and there is a dishwasher. Ceiling fans in DR & BRs. Custom mini-blinds on windows and doors. Newer storm doors and Marvin windows with screens. Tenants share free w/d in cellar, fenced backyard, and large side yard with 2nd flr landlords. Space will be allowed for garden, if desired. One off-street parking space is included in the lease. We are looking for a family, professionals, grad students, or other responsible adults who would sign a lease for a year - or preferably, stay longer. We will check your references, and we can provide references as well. Clean, vaccinated, housetrained, and leash walked pets (up to 2) are OK. We are quiet landlords. We respect our tenants' privacy.
