TREATING CATCH BASINS TO COMBAT MOSQUITO BREEDING**** *Curbing Mosquito Population Cuts Risk of West Nile Virus*** **** Starting on Monday, June 11, the Allegheny County Health Department will treat storm water catch basins in selected areas of Pittsburgh with pesticides to combat the breeding of mosquitoes that can carry the West Nile virus. **** ** ** West Nile has already been detected in the County this year. Four mosquito samples collected last month have tested positive, three in Pittsburgh’s East End and one in Penn Hills. These are the County’s earliest positive samples of the season since mosquito trapping and testing began over ten years ago. **** ** ** “Any catch basin that holds water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes during the heat of summer and treatment with pesticides can keep mosquito larvae from emerging into full-fledged adults capable of spreading disease to humans,” said Interim Health Director Dr. Ronald E. Voorhees. **** ** ** The pesticides, which are non-toxic to people, pets and aquatic life, inhibit mosquito breeding and are deposited manually in catch basins. Treated basins are marked with a bright green chalk. **** ** ** Health Department staff will treat about 10,000 catch basins in certain areas of Pittsburgh, including eastern and western wards as well as wards on the North Side and South Side, which have a history in previous years of West Nile activity. **** ** ** The treatments will continue daily until all the catch basins are treated and will take place weekdays from 4 to 9 p.m., but may be postponed when heavy rains are forecast. **** ** ** Health officials say residents can also help reduce the mosquito population by eliminating and treating breeding sites on their own private property. GlobalPittsburgh, formerly Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors, is offering an exciting opportunity for members of the community to host 2 Iraqi high school students from July 6-16th. Our organization is placing a total of ten English-speaking high school aged Iraqi students visiting the United States as part of a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. All hosts will be interviewed and screened. We will be arranging a very active daily schedule for the students and would very much like to have students stay with families with high school aged children, whenever possible. We hope to be able to place the students in pairs with host families. Hosts will be invited to participate in a number of activities with the group. We hope that you seriously consider this wonderful opportunity to host a pair of these amazing young adults. This program is a wonderful way for you and your family to interact first hand with another culture and mutually benefit from this experience. This will be the second year that GlobalPittsburgh has participated in this exchange project. We look forward to visiting potential host families and discussing the program with them in greater depth. California Olive Oil Connection- Last weeek I mentioned that I read the book Extra Virginity while I was in Paris.  The book basically tells the story about how most of the oil that we get here is definitely not "extra Virgin" olive oil.  In most cases it is much lower quality oil and in some cases actually adulterated oil.  It is really a shocking story.  The book also does a lot to educate on the history of olive oil and some of the keys to obtaining high quality EVO today.  I am happy to report that he gave pretty high marks the artisinal olive oils which are being produced in California and that I am carrying at the market.  It made me feel really good about what we are doing at the market by bringing these oils to Pittsburgh. To promote education, I started a little lending library at the market and lent out 3 of the 4 copies of Extra Virginity book.  So stop by and borrow a copy when you have some time to give it a read.   Also check out the website for more information:http://www.extravirginity.com/ The Greek Gourmet- will have homemade spinach and meat pies to the market each week- in addition to 20+ flavors of hummus. PA Made Cheese- No new cheeses this week.  But I am hoping a few people can make it to the fund raising dinner mentioned above that will benefit a local cheese maker.   I have encouraged all the western PA cheesemakers that I work with to apply for the scholarship.   I also want to mentioned that I got a rather large order of cheddar cheese wheels this week from Clover Creek Cheese Cellar.  I ordered the oldest cheese that they had in inventory, which is 9 months old.  I plan to age it for several more months until it is at least a year old.  I have been getting a lot of requests for this longer aged cheese from the cheedar lovers out there.
