Highland Park Kids' Committee Halloween Parade When: Sunday, October 28, 3pm to 4 pm Where: Highland Park Victorian Fountain, main entrance to the Park Your little ghouls, goblins, princesses and princes are invited to the annual Highland Park Community Council Halloween Parade. Local children of all ages are invited to join us in costume for the Halloween parade and costume contest. Prizes will be awarded in a number of different categories and delicious snacks will be provided. The parade is being held the Sunday before Halloween, since Oct. 31 falls on a school night and we wanted to give everyone maximum trick or treating time. No sign-up required. [Highland Park] Day of the Dead Art Workshop, October 25

Dear neighbors, I would love it if you would join me at Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse next Thursday from 6:30 to 9:30 pm for a community art-making workshop to explore the Mexican Dia de los Muertos tradition. An "ofrenda" is an altar, usually built in the home, to honor a departed loved one during Día de los Muertos celebrations in Mexico. At this workshop, participants will learn about the traditional elements of a Day of the Dead altar, then create small box shrines to celebrate the lives of those we have lost. Each box will be a unique and personal work of art that engages both tradition and individual expression. Participants are encouraged (though not required) to bring photographs (or photocopies) and other small items that relate to the person they wish to honor (some people choose to remember a beloved pet). I will provide a selection of wooden boxes and a wide array of art supplies, tools, decorative materials and interesting found objects from my collection and from the PCCR treasure trove. Hot cider provided, feel free to bring a snack to share if you like. The workshop is $25 and includes all materials. This workshop is designed for adults, but young people over 12 are welcome to participate with a grown friend or parent. Dear Neighbors, In the spring 2013 semester, a visiting Russian scholar will be teaching in the Carnegie Mellon History department. We are looking for a furnished apartment for him for that period. The apartment should be located close to one of our bus routes (71B or 71A) and ideally would rent for no more than $800 a month. The visitor will arrive on Jan. 10 and stay until May 15.
