[Highland Park] Bicycle stolen - happy update!

Hello Neighbors, We've just heard from police that they managed to recover the bicycle stolen out of our backyard, and in the process, arrest a group of young men carrying a bag of break-in tools. The police dept said that our filing a police report, along with a vigilant neighbor who called in to report people shining flashlights into cars, made this possible. And they urged us to spread the word on the list-serve to continue contacting them re: thefts and suspicious activity. Sent from my iPhone

[Highland Park] Farmers Market Coop Update

Update for Saturday July 30th I spoke with the farmers this week and asked them what to expect at the market this Saturday They all said "more of the same." Yes, more of the same wide selection of delicious locally grown fruits and vegetables. We are entering the prime of the season and the locally grown items are fresh and plentiful. Tomato's and Corn in particular are now in. Prices are also very reasonable. We should all start to think about "putting up" various items for the winter. Last Sunday I made my first batch of tomato puree from a large basket of tomatoes that I purchased at the market. Delicious! Speaking of putting things up, our friend Mariam Rubin is at it again with another installment of Miriam's Garden in the Post Gazette. Please check out her article which has a great pickle recipe. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11209/1163261-34-0.stm Miriam also mentions a pastry chef Susie Treon who makes desserts for Point and Park Bruge. Just by chance I was hanging out at Park Bruges in Highland Park last night and had the Apricot Tarte Tatin. It was to dies for. I thought I was back in France. Any ways, back to the putting things up topic. The farmers at the market can usually take orders for larger quantities of items that you can use for canning. So please put in your orders for baskets, bushels, or truck loads of veggies. You can stop by the Greenawalts, Kennedy, Kistaco or Zang booths. Please stop by to see us this Saturday. Office of Councilman Patrick Dowd - August 2011 LETTER FROM COUNCILMAN DOWD Dear friends in District 7, Pittsburgh City Council recently voted 6-3 to pass Bill 2011-1939 which would authorize a referendum amending the Home Rule Charter. I was one of three council members who voted against it. Please know that a ban on drilling in the city is already in place and even if successful this referendum would provide no additional protection for our citizens or our environment. As a community, we are better off channeling our energies and resources adding multiple layers of protection instead of more of the same. These additional layers would include a zoning code amendment and a noise ordinance as well as working with municipal authorities up-river encouraging them to refuse even initiating processes that would allow them to accept contaminated wastewater. I am working on these bills and hope to bring them to a vote this year. While this was marketed as a Marcellus shale drilling ban, there was a lot of additional language denying the legitimacy of state or federal laws as well as rights guaranteed under the Pennsylvania and US Constitutions. These sections, among others, make the legislation illegal and will likely keep it off the ballot. I supported the drilling ban back in November as an interim step while we established other layers of protection. Our goal should be to add more layers of protection for citizens and the environment and not to be satisfied with the thin layer of the ban. The Run, stretching from Heth's Run Bridge on Butler Street to the Pittsburgh Zoo in the Morningside and Highland Park neighborhoods of the East End of Pittsburgh, was covered in garbage, appliances, construction debris, and car parts. Over only 4 days of cleaning, the volunteers removed almost 100 car tires and half a dozen enormous truck tires from the area. Overall, several tons of refuse was collected from Heth's Run.
