I've seen a number of posts about this and wanted to add my comments. We experienced this on N. St Clair between Stanton and Jackson over the past few years. Our previous car would lock itself after exiting, but the new car didn't, and I had left it unlocked on several occasions. It seemed to me the break ins happened, first thing in the morning as kids were walking up to Fulton, but I'm not sure about that. As we are now on Jackson and have a gated carport, haven't experienced this recently. I want to second the notion of filing a police report. That way it shows up in the police stats and helps the police have an idea as to what types of problems are happening in different places, even if they can't follow up on each break in. I'd also say, this may (???) be a good thing for block watch groups? I'm not sure- would it feel safe enough if you see people checking car handles to shout out about it? I don't want to see anyone put in danger, and yet also feel as if there are ways for neighborhood members to empower themselves, it is a good thing. -- Thomas C. Good catch Thomas! Just a side note to say that Open Office is free from www.openoffice.org and is as good as if not better than the best Office package Microsoft has to offer. It runs on Window, MAC and Linux and is a free download from www.openoffice.org The only catch is that if you want someone that only has M$FT office to be able to open one of your files, you just need to use the drop down menu when saving in and choose the appropriate extension. .doc for word, .xls for excel etc. Steve Karl On Tue, Jul 12, 2011 at 10:25 AM, Thomas C. We also had a car break-in, sometime late on Sunday night/early Monday morning. Although technically, it wasn't a break in because we left the doors unlocked - stupid, I know. It was actually our old pickup truck that we left unlocked, which has nothing of value inside and is barely worth the effort in checking out, but apparently someone considered it worth their while anyway. They took our loose change, and rifled the glove box. There wasn't anything else worth taking except a pair of jumper cables, which they left behind. Our truck was actually parked in our driveway that night, so someone definitely had to make a specific effort to walk off the street to check out the vehicle. I think perhaps someone IS just walking the streets and opportunisitcally checking car doors to see if they get lucky. Our car - which was locked - was not tampered with, so it appears as if they're not interested in putting forth too much effort.
