[Highland Park] Furnace replacement

My faithful gas boiler furnace and I have been growing older together for many years, but now it looks like if I go on for more than a few weeks the furnace will pre-decease me...... leaving me in the cold . (literally) I would greatly appreciate referrals for an immediate and reliable installation of a new furnace in the event that I do outlast the failing one- a statistical possibility in that the furnace is even 4½ years older than I am! [Highland Park] Spring IS coming - Community Garden Signups!

I know it may not seem like it today, but the Spring gardening season is coming! That said, for the eager, I'm going to have a first round of tours/sign-ups for the Stanton Heights Community Gardens (above the cemetery on Stanton Avenue) this Saturday, Feb.26, from 10am-12pm. If you want to come down then, we can walk around the plots and check things out. The gate will be closed, but unlocked. Entrance is on Stanton Avenue above the Cemetery. Price is $15 for the season for 20'x20' plots. Membership was on the decline for many years, but new people have been joining and I'd really like this to become a vibrant community space again and get it cleaned up and looking nice! [Highland Park] Stray cat

Hey, all. I have an update on the stray cat I trapped last Thursday: * He did not have a chip. * He was deemed as "not adoptable/feral" by the Animal Rescue League, so I had him put into the Trap Neuter Release program. This program spays or neuters the strays, marks a notch in one ear, and then re-releases the stray to its home neighborhood. * Before they neutered him, the ARL ran some bloodwork, and it came back positive for FIV, feline AIDS, so he was put down. Also, I'd like to clarify a few things about the trapping itself because of some questions I've gotten: * I utilize a humane trap. It's rigged so that when an animal steps all the way to the back of the trap (where there's food), it releases a spring that brings the door down behind the animal. There are no sharp edges, nothing to harm the animal. * My intention is NEVER to harm any animal, and never to capture or scare neighborhood cats (or any other creature.) I only use the trap when I've seen a stray in the area (a cat with no collar that will not come to me when I try to coax it in). * Any animal that I catch that has no identification will be checked for a chip by my vet or the Animal Rescue League. I would never want anyone to be separated from their pet. One of my cats got out years ago and was lost for almost 2 weeks. It is a horrible thing to go through On Saturday the 5th, my partner and I noticed a stray tortoise-shell kitten, about 5-6 months old. It had no collar. When I tried to call it to me, it ran quickly away. So, I put the trap out with some food in it a few different nights over the next week. I still haven't caught that kitten, but I'll continue trying when the weather clears up a little. (I never leave the trap set when it's really cold out, and never when I'm away from home.) I realize how frightening it is for the animal who gets stuck inside, and want to keep that fear down to a minimum. I've worked with cats for years now, fostering adults, orphaned kittens, etc. My first goal is always the health and welfare of the animal in question. I've also worked with some folks on the listserv who've lost their cats by lending them the trap and showing them how to use it. All of those animals were happily re-united with their owners. If anyone has any other questions, (or if you want some help catching your own lost pet, or have a stray in your neighborhood you need help with) please feel free to contact me. Thanks everyone!
