[Highland Park] lost dogs?

At 12:45 this afternoon (Thursday), as I sat waiting at the light at the intersection of Butler and One Wild Place, I saw two healthy, well-groomed, chummy dogs with collars come out from behind the zoo sign and proceed up One Wild Place in the middle of the street, looking like they might turn toward the park. One was a white and tan husky, and the other appeared to be a black and brown striped pit bull mix of some sort (I'm not good at dog breeds). I regret that I wasn't able to stop and help, but I hope that this information helps someone locate his/her lost pets! Shannon Hula

[Highland Park] yard sale left over

Hi Neighbors, We have a new-in-box bathroom vent fan available for purchase, as no one purchased it at our yard sale. It is a Panasonic "Whisper-fit" "super-quiet ventilating fan" with an energy star seal. Model #FV-05VF2. I think we paid around $100 for it online. [Highland Park] List of Basement Water Sealing Recommendations

Here are the references/insights I received, in no particular order. Thanks, to everyone who responded: 1. The solution to this seems to be trenching around the perimeter of your basement, installing pipes to collect the water and pumps to remov it. We got a couple estimates and went with Champion. It took a couple days & was messy but no more water in basement. 2. SELF-REFERRAL: I am a home improvement contractor lic and ins. I would be happy to view your issues and give you my input. Plenty of referrals in the HP area. Tom Morgan 412-805-5602 3. I can highly recommend Watershield. My clients have been very pleased with their honesty and quality of service. If it's a simple fix - they will tell you! If you need more substantial work, they will give you a fair price. Watershield - 412-761-9600 Ask for John 4. We had Water Shield do French drains in our basement two years ago, and are quite satisfied with their work. Instead of losing shrubbery along the foundation front of our house, the work was done from the inside. There is a sump pump in a shallow well that gets the water out to the sewer. No more wet basement. This company is basically a one-man show, but he knows what to do and has good workmen to help him. 5. We used to have these troubles but had our basement not-only-sealed but fitted with French Drains, a de-humidifier and a pump for water - it works beautifully and the whole house has benefited (there's a moldy air smell you can get used to when the basement is wet - but when it is gone everything is better including allergies.) We used Ever-Dry and they were great. On time, polite, expert, clean - the whole thing was a breeze and it really works. It was not cheap but it remains the best home improvement we have ever made. If you call them tell them Jim and Deborah Bogen recommended you - one of us may get a discount - you or me. Good luck. Here's other useful advice I received, including for do-it-yourself solutions, again in no particular order: 1. Before you do anything check for water pooling near the seepage, check for clogged gutters and downspouts. If you have sandstone foundation walls, water proofing will not help. 99% of water issues can be fixed from the outside. 2. In addition to sealing the basement you might consider installing rain barrels to collect the water from your downspouts & redistribute it to your lawn or flowerbeds before it gets to your basement. 3. This is a common issue in Pittsburgh. . . there is something you can paint on called Dry-Lock. I think I spelled it right. I'm not that great with this issue so I don't know how to tell you if it will be enough, but I thought I would pass it on. Many deal with this whenever the rains really saturate the ground and they just pump it out. . .You can also buy a submersible pump at Home Depot for not too much money, should be under $50 and this can attach to a hose and you can pump the water out a window or something. Having any laundry appliances, furnace, etc. up on a cement block or something is a common thing. 4. The problem may be systemic to the gutters / downspouts not being cleaned or configured properly. 5. We have had good results after painting our walls with Super Thoroseal Waterproof Coating -- they sell it at Home Depot. We very rarely get puddles now, maybe once a year or even less, when the ground is at its most saturated -- none recently, for example. We also had to get a dehumidifier to prevent mildew.
