[Highland Park] craftsmen who work on porch columns

Good evening neighbors, A couple weeks ago I requested feedback on who could replace/repair deteriorating porch columns. There were many helpful responses and several people emailed requesting I share the information. Below is a summary of the recommendations. Thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge! You may wish to try Ken Hall of Hallcraft (412-621-7605) on Gross Street in Bloomfield (below West Penn Hospital). He is superb. Please tell Ken that Dr. Vagley recommended him to your neighbor. Somerset Columns:http://www.doorandcolumn.com/custom-columns.html I got two Scamozzi caps from them maybe 20 years ago for our house. Full line of columns, caps, bases, wood and otherwise. By the way, carpenter ants mean wet wood so your neighbor should fix the underlying problem before installing new material. One suggestion would be Allied Millwork of Pittsburgh -- on Penn Ave in the strip around Lawrenceville. They do custom made fine wood windows & doors -- but they may be able to lead you in the right direction. Chuck is the guy you'll speak with. They made a magnificent front door for me which I could not be happier with. You may want to contact Dan Hinchman. He does some millwork himself and also has great resources for others who might do more complex jobs. I recomend Paul Voelker contracting. He has the capability and resources to assist with your needs. 412-303-7567. We found columns at Chadsworth. They are on line as the company is in N.C. It is an almost perfect match only the capital is slightly different and they have a huge variety. Cheri. I would check with Jim Ladner; even if he doesn't do it he might know someone that does. I understand he recently moved his space, but I think his number is still 412-849-0357. Jim made some bed rails for me and does nice work.

hey all, there is also a large (on wheels) display shelf thingy that our organization used that we no longer need. it is well put together and made out of MDF. it has ropes running on one side and shelves on the other. it is sitting outside 1136 Winterton as well. If it's not gone today, we will be taking it to Construction Junction as well. -- Cara

[Highland Park] recommendations for plaster work?

looking for someone who can patch an 8' x 4' section of old school plaster ceiling in our entry. I don't want a drywall cosmetic fix, just someone who knows how to work with plaster in a 115 year old house. thanks!
