Hello Friends, My name is Robert Collins and I am about to close on the Walnut Market (deal closes 3/31). I just wanted to let people in the neighborhood know about the planned changes. First off, this store is a dream come true for me. I am going to transform the store from a convenience store into a neighborhood market. The cornerstones of the store will be as follows, amazing organic and local produce, all natural and organic groceries, and any local provisions I can find that are viable such as LaPrima coffee and Pgh Snack and Nut. Over the last 3 years I have gone from working from chain grocery stores to working at Right by Nature and John McGinnis' store. I was the produce manager at RBN when it opened and made it a favorite stop for local and organic produce. Unfortunately, due to the financial issues of the store I was forced to leave RBN. I then transformed McGinnis' Castle Shannon produce department into a mostly organic and local produce destination. I have met a lot of wonderful local farmers and I am very excited to renew those relationships. My first month of operation will focus on cleaning the store, having it painted, new signage, etc. Next I will be revamping the produce section into a fresh array of organics and in season local items. As part of a reduce, recycle, reuse ideology, I have been compiling all reclaimed fixtures to satisfy that mantra. We will also be transitioning to biodegradable shopping bags and produce bags. They have been available, but very few places use them because of the cost. There will also be a 25 cent bag discount for bringing your own. These changes will happen over several months, as I have to sell out of the inventory on hand. As those items sell down they will be replaced with mostly organic and natural items. If you have any suggestions for me, please don't hesitate to call, stop by, or email me. Tomorrow(Friday), I will be at the Farm to Table gathering at the CC, so maybe I'll see some people from the neighborhood. Monday April 5th, we will be operating as the new Bryant Street Market, hope to see you soon. Bryant Street is really coming to life and I feel blessed to be apart of it. Consider joining the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater to participate in the Pick Up Penn Ave event-- put on by Friendship Development Associates and the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative. We at the KST are getting a group together to take part in the beautification of Penn Avenue for a clean up like no other! On *Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 9am-11am, v*olunteer with others from surrounding Pittsburgh neighborhoods and participate in the competitive clean up. There are two interesting items in the Post-Gazette today (Wednesday), page C-1. One is about the Pittsburgh Courier newspaper, and includes a photo of Patricia Prattis, now Jennings, as a child. Patricia is a former neighbor of mine, and we included a photograph with caption on her in the 2008 book Pittsburgh's East Liberty Valley, published by the East End/East Liberty Historical Society. The other article features the African-American artist Romare Bearden, a Peabody High School graduate whom we likewise included in the East Liberty history book. Al Mann
