The 3 Rivers Bioneers (3RB) conference is an incubator for good ideas and strategies that inform and inspire positive change. Local efforts to reach a sustainable and just region will be highlighted. Transition to a lower energy lifestyle with Transition Pittsburgh. Work with the Ujamaa Collective to overcome food deserts and have fresh produce for all. Create stories of Healthy People and Planet with Interplay and its troupe of performers telling our own personal local tales. Listen and work with other young people as they delve into introductory topics such as health and personal wellness, the basis of strong communities and the environmental effects of consumption. Hear from the many youth participating in the 3RB youth track during the reception to nationally renowned film YERT (Your Environmental Road Trip). Expanding the definition of sustainability, 3RB is exposing solutions for social justice and environmental sustainability. The host, the Urban Ecology Collaborative (UEC), is a network of organizations and individuals working to enhance the health and vibrancy of Pittsburgh. Building upon the success of two previous conferences—the Green Forum and MERGE (Methods to Engage Residents in Grassroots Efforts), the UEC is proud to partner with Bioneers (www.bioneers.org ) for the second local Bioneers conference. Bioneers is a nonprofit educational organization hosting the national Bioneers Conference in California for its 21st year. 3RB will broadcast multiple visionary speakers from the national conference to Pittsburgh, including renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, climate scientist James Hansen, and Executive Director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State, John A. The closure is needed for access and safety as crews demolish part of the Millville Industrial Park along Route 28. The closure will occur from 8 p.m. on Wednesday through 5 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, on Route 28 between the 31st Street Bridge and the 40th Street Bridge. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. Posted detour: Northbound (outbound) * Turn right onto the 31st Street Bridge * Make left onto Liberty Avenue * Continue north onto Butler Street * Make left onto 40th Street Bridge * End detour at northbound Route 28 Southbound (inbound) * Make left on the 40th Street Bridge * Right onto Butler Street * Follow Butler Street south to Penn Avenue * Continue on Penn Avenue to 31st Street Bridge * Cross bridge and end detour at southbound Route 28. The $23.5 million Route 28 East Ohio Street Improvement Project 40th Street Bridge work includes widening and reconstruction, drainage, concrete barrier, concrete curb and sidewalk, highway lighting, signing and pavement marking, sign structures, signals and ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) installation, wall construction, water line and sewer relocation, demolition, and other construction from about 1,300 feet north of the 31st Street Bridge (Route 2122) intersection to approximately 2,560 feet north of the 40th Street Bridge (Route 2124) interchange. [Highland Park] Worm casting tea

I am making another batch of worm compost tea this week. Worm tea is a wonderful fertilizer for indoor plants (tropical plants can use year round nutrients) or for your winter veggies. Since I compost with almost all organic vegetable scraps from my kitchen, the castings are totally safe for use on food crops or in your house. I'm offering the tea at $5 for 16 oz. and $20 for a half gallon. You can use the tea straight or dilute it up to 1:10 with water. It is best to use the tea as soon as possible (within a day or so) so that the beneficial microbes are still active in the solution when applied to the soil. If you can't use it right away, however, it is still one of the most effective fertilizers available. The tea will be ready for pick up Wednesday between noon and 5 p.m.-- or, if needed, Thursday morning. If you are interested, email me (Christie), and I'll give you directions for pick up.

Hi Neighbors, On Saturday evening I was leaving to go out of town and put a matted 8x10 photograph (of some rasberry bushes with a wooden fence behind) on top of my car while packing and forgot to take it off. I'm assuming it fell off somewhere on my block (1400 North Euclid) or the blocks around it (Callowhill, Highland). It had a signature at the bottom of k.flanagan.dee.
