I will echo part of the post quoted below. Frequently kids moving through the neighborhood will confront folks in their yards or on their porches needlessly with invective and often with threats. A lot of times they appear to be returning from the HP swimming pool, so perhaps it would be possible to request an occasional police presence for a while after the general swim ends. My own strategy is to make no response whatsoever, but all that does is prevent my own blood pressure from rising - it doesn't prevent your children from being showered with curses or threats, etc. Another concern is that these kids are often walking right down the middle of the streets, and as we all know, many drivers (ESPECIALLY on weekend afternoons) operate their vehicles unsafely through our residential neighborhood, with only luck preventing them from killing pedestrians. I think it is appropriate to call 911 when there are groups of roving kids on or near your property and/or making threats.We came from a city neighborhood that would do just that and even went as far as hiring an off duty police officer to add more security to our neighborhood. After less than 3 years, property values nearly doubled and an old neighborhood had been gentrified. Many have heard about the "broken window" theory. If your neighbors window is broken then that begets more broken windows until the whole neighborhood is in shambles. But this also works in reverse. Add curb appeal to a worn down house and maintain that look then all the other houses slowly but surely will improve. That, along with more police presence will make a neighborhood really sought after. As far as our cars go, we all should know not to leave a single thing in them. Change, CD's, umbrellas, purses, laptops are all hot items and let's face it, we live in a big city so no matter, what some cars are perfect targets.

[Highland Park] another foster cat looking for a home!

Hello neighbors, I am sending another email about a cat looking for a home. He's a handsome black 2-3 yr old boy, who was taken to Animal Friends as a stray who was not very trusting of humans. He may have had some bad experiences. In any event, he and I worked very hard to build some trust, and he has come a long way. He did try the cat room at Animal Friends, but found a shelter environment way too stressful, so he's back with me. Once he gets to know you, he's a wonderful, friendly cat who loves attention and purrs a lot. He also LOVES other cats. He would need a relatively quiet home, preferably with feline siblings, with a human family who will be patient as he comes out of his shell in a new environment. Please note that this is an Animal Friends foster and the adoption would have to go through them. Please let me know if you are interested in giving this sweet boy a forever home. Meg
