Neighbors, Please mark your calendar to join me for a Walk in the Woods (the park) on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2009 at 6:30pm. We start at the fountain, walk in the woods as much as we can, and end back at the fountain about an hour later. The walk is fun for everyone but keep in mind that paths and steps in the park can be uneven. Hi everyone, I just launched a new web site: http://www.loseyourjob.com The purpose of this site is to allow people to read first hand accounts about losing a job. For example, it could be that they were outsourced, or the company was acquired and there were layoffs. There are an infinite number of stories. All stories can be posted anonymously and categorized by company, so if you were laid off by a company, you could go read other folks experiences at being laid off. While I am a good web developer, I am not so good at promotion, so I would appreciate it if you could take a look at the site and decide to share a story, and feel free to share with me any ideas on how to improve it. Hello neighbors: I didn't get the fountain grass fast enough but I just wanted to let others know that if they need to divide their ornamental grasses, I would love to have some! I would be willing to exchange a darker pink weigelia shrub (medium sized, two years old, just not crazy about the way the color is mixing with other colors in my garden) for some grass. [Highland Park] Water Fountain Near the Bathrooms

While we are on the subject of the bathrooms at the reservoir, it reminds me that the water fountain has been pouring water onto the sidewalk since it was turned on this year. It seems like such a waste of water, and it's also very difficult to get a drink without taking a shower as well. I hope someone can make the needed adjustment. Mary Anne Papale

[Highland Park] free grasses

Dear Neighbors, I am giving away 8 large clumps of fountain grass (see description, below) from my home garden. The grasses are maintenance-free and have beautiful plumes, but have been self-seeding, which has been a problem for their current location in my yard. If this is not a concern for your garden, these are great plants. Please call 412-361-7904 and ask for Michael if you are interested in taking these plants. I live at 901 N Highland Avenue. General Culture: Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. Tolerates part shade, but may not flower in too much shade. May freely self-seed in optimum growing conditions to the point of being considered very weedy. Seed plumes may be removed before seed ripens if this grass is located near beds or lawns where self-seeding would be a problem. 'Moudry' does not reliably come true from seed, however, and should be propagated by division. Cut foliage to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear. Noteworthy Characteristics: 'Moudry' is a warm season ornamental fountain grass cultivar which typically grows in graceful, spreading clumps to 2-3' tall and as wide. It is most noted for its distinctive dark purple flower spikes. Features narrow, medium to deep green leaves (to 1/2" wide) in summer, changing to golden yellow in fall and fading to beige in late fall. Foliage usually remains attractive throughout the winter. Showy, purplish-black, bristly, bottle brush-like flower spikes arch outward from the clump in late summer like water spraying from a fountain (hence the common name). Flower spikes turn brownish as the seeds form, and spikes usually persist until late fall or early winter before shattering. Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Uses: Specimen, group or mass. Foliage and attractive flower spikes of this ornamental grass provide excellent texture, color and contrast to borders, foundations and open areas. Also grows well in moist locations such as peripheries of water gardens, ponds or streams.
