[Highland Park] Sled riding results

Thank you all for your many responses! At least one neighbor asked me to share these results. It seems there are two VERY popular sled riding hills in Highland Park for the neighborhood! 1.) "King Estate" (hill shaped like a bowl near the intersection of Negley and Elgin), 2.) "7 Bumps" (behind the farmhouse by the baseball field, but beware of Stanton at the hill's bottom and dog droppings). Also if the roads are clear, some say to try Hartwood Acres for a fun hill. I look forward to seeing many of you out there after a good snowfall! -Matt

Our gas dryer is having problems and we're looking for recommendations for reliable repair services. We've used Perla in the past. It was an okay experience, but the reviews online are NOT at all positive. I'm a bit leery. --dan

[Highland Park] Cell phone recycling question

Neighbors, I have three cell phones I'd like to recycle, and have worthy recipients in mind, but am having a hard time figuring out how to erase my data from them. One is a Verizon LG phone purchased in 2005; another is a Sprint Samsung circa 2002; the third is a JItterbug 3-button phone purchased in 2007. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bonnie Pfister

[Highland Park] good sled riding hills in/near Highland Park?

Hello. This is my first winter living in Highland Park and I was given a sled for Christmas. I am curious where the best locations are in Highland Park or nearby for kids and adults to go sled riding when it snows. If you know of a good sledding spot, please let me know! See you at the symphony! -- Susy INFO ON ADAMS & THESE CONCERTS: John Adams, perhaps the most well-known and most frequently-performed of American living composers, is the Composer of the Year for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 2008-2009 season. Throughout the season, selections from Adams’ orchestral repertoire are scheduled in four BNY Mellon Grand Classics programs. The centerpiece of the season are two special programs featuring several of Adams' large-scale works inspired by 20th and 21st-century historic events, which the composer will conduct on Friday, January 16 & Saturday, January 17. The focal point of these concerts is the Doctor Atomic Symphony. This newly-crafted symphony uses instrumental threads from Adams’ most recent opera about the scientists, particularly Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, who were involved with the historic Manhattan Project. Opening the January 16 program is a concert version of Act III of Adams' Grammy Award-winning opera Nixon in China, featuring baritone James Maddalena in the title role, which he created in the work’s premiere. Tenor Russell Thomas sings the role of Mao, and sopranos Jessica Rivera and Hila Plitmann sing Pat Nixon and Madame Mao, respectively. The January 17 concert features Adams' Pulitzer Prize-winning work, On the Transmigration of Souls, which was written as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. [Highland Park] porch thefts (continued) - hampton st

today between 1100-1130 an item was stolen from my porch. It was a freebie I was leaving for someone to pick up- so it had little/no value to me (an extremely old laptop)... anyway, as my babysitter left the house she confirmed the bag was on the porch (well hidden from street view and at the dead end of hampton east of heberton), and she also saw some people taking the footpath from my street over to winterton. I didn't try to extract the exact identities/ number of people from her, but it looks like they saw her leaving (assumed the house is now unoccupied) and decided to snoop around - and saw the item on the porch and removed it. Perhaps this is the mystery behind the ups boxes missing from other porches. My house is rather tucked away, so it may be a bit more vulnerable than most, but still, a somewhat brazen act considering. I am not really interested in filing a report unless someone can convince me it would help.... its best just to keep an eye out for those opportunistic folks wandering our neighborhood during the day (during freezing rain - at that!) one thing to remember: if strangers/transients see you leave, you are exposing an opportunity, attempt to delay departure or tactically dis-inform (leave a house light on, etc) to dissuade 'snooping'. We did receive a wonderful Dell donation (thank you so much alison) BUT we are in touch with many deserving people who need computers right here in our community. If you are interested in donating, we will be happy to hold and redistribute your old computers to families connected with local organizations and churches such as Open Hand Ministries, and Open Door and Mt.
