Hello Neighbors and Friends, I recently joined a Mom's group - MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). As part of the year's activities, we each prepare a shoe box of gifts for Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. I was very excited to learn about the project b/c a) I always mean to do something charitable, but b) I never feel like I have massive amounts of time or energy to commit. I realized that many of you may be in a similar boat, so I wanted to offer up the project to you. If you'd like to fill a shoebox with gifts and drop it off at our house, I would be happy to bring the boxes to our meeting and make sure that the details are handled and that the boxes go out together. I haven't checked the website, but if you'd like to read a little more about it, I'm sure there is information on there about the project: www.samaritanspurse.org. Our address is 6012 Bryant Street. The boxes need to go out by mid-November, so if we set a goal of them being to our house by November 1, I think that would allow enough time to handle all of the details (forms, wrapping, etc.). If you're not comfortable with leaving the boxes on our front porch, you could always call me first - 412-404-8628 - to make sure that our family is at home. Thanks for your help! Alison Bogle 1. Shoe BoxUse an empty shoe box (standard size) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. For those that are religious/spiritual: Say a prayer for the child who will receive your gift. 2. Boy or GirlDetermine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Make a note of the gender and age and stick it to the box. (I will fill out the appropriate label for you at our meeting - they will have extra forms for us) 3. Fill with GiftsFill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Suggestions are listed below. 4. Include your DonationPlease donate $7 or more for each shoe box to help cover shippig and other project costs. (you can put this in an envelope inside the box and I will fill out the correct donation forms for you at our meeting). 5. Drop offWe will compile all boxes at our meeting and drop them off at our nearest collection center during National Collection Week in mid-November. Suggested items:School supplies: pens, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, markers, writing pads, paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc. Toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch a Sketch, - include extra batteries if your toy requires batteries. Hygiene Items: toothbrush, toothpaste, bar soap (in plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.. [Highland Park] Drexel Heritage dining room table for sale

We have a very handsome, hand-crafted dining room table for sale. From the Drexel Heritage "Covington Park" collection, it is a beautiful double-pedestal eighteenth-century style formal dining room table with claw feet measuring approximately 6.5' x 4'. The table top, legs & main body are all true Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). Supportive minor woodwork is hard Maple. Table surface veneer is a gorgeous Mahogany burl. Three pictures are attached. This table is in very good condition (some minor scratches) and comes with neither chairs nor leaves. Because of the solid Mahogany construction this table is heavy. [Highland Park] more vandalism on N. Euclid

I'm writing on behalf of my neighbors here on N. Euclid, near Wellesley. Their yard was vandalized Friday in the early evening--LOTS of broken flower pots and stolen Halloween decorations. This is the third time in recent weeks that this family has had items from their porch/yard stolen or smashed. My neighbors reported this latest incident to the police and urge others to do the same. The officer told said they absolutely don't mind coming out for these calls. Or, if you like, you can always call the police and tell them you just want the incident on-record; an officer doesn't necessarily have to come out. To echo an earlier post: Folks, it's really important to report this stuff - even minor stuff. We can't expect them to increase police presence if they don't know how bad the problem is. [Highland Park] Help Defeat Blood Cancers

Hi Highland Park Neighbor, Maybe you’ve seen me running around the neighborhood on creaky knees. Without running for a worthwhile cause I could never have ditched a donut-based diet in order to train for a marathon, and raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) leukemia research and treatment. I’m writing to ask for your help in treating and curing blood cancers. With the help of many, including four Highland Park neighbors, I’ve raised $1400 with $2600 to go at http://pages.teamintraining.org/wpa/rnrsa08/mstaresinic. Donors have left messages like, “Double cancer survivor – five years!” “We're so thankful that our mother and our friend are FIVE YEARS FREE of lymphoma!” The LLS has helped more kids than ever survive leukemia. The LLS has suggested donation levels -- $55 for a week of low-grade chemo, $115 for blood transfusion. Of course, anything is welcome! It’s easy to give: mail or drop off a check made out to LLS in an envelope inside our screen door at 5800 Elgin Street. [Highland Park] Car Broken into, again !!!

Hi there - I practicing what I preach, I again am reporting the ransacking of our vehicle. It had to be younger people, as they got just three items. Two cell phone car chargers (these days this is absolutely worthless unless you know exactly the make and model for each charger), as well as an old pocket PC (the information on this is the biggest lose). We had been contacting our customers for a trip while on the road, and had forgotten it was still there. They got lucky just to have found it, but the batteries are giving out so I hope it just died on whom ever took it. This happened during Saturday night, and right on our parking patio next to our home. This had to be locals whom were walking around looking for entry to homes, cars etc, and we did file a police report. It is probably the same people that hit us in July, so they have a target and are coming back. Our vehicle had been locked, but all doors were unlocked when we found it Saturday morning. Sorry not to have gotten this out sooner, but our e-mail server was down for upgrades since Friday night, thus the lateness of this going out. Please lock your vehicles and homes, and do not just walk away for a few seconds. It's a green boys bike with two stickers on it and appears to be a very nice bike. In a message dated 10/6/2008 7:19:06 A.M. i hope this is ok to post here. i figured there were probably a fair number of people from the neighborhood who ran the great race, and maybe someone here knows how i can get my hands on a long sleeved, navy blue tech shirt with "runners for obama" emblazoned on it, like one of the ones i saw during the great race. i only saw a couple of them, but they caught my eye every time. a web search hasn't been able to turn up anything that matches what i saw. anyone able to help a runner out? genevieve

[Highland Park] Me again

Thanks to all of you who have dropped off packaged snacks, microwave popcorn and water for the volunteers. We have a continuing need for these things and will especially need a lot during the last week of the campaign when we make our final big push of canvassing and phone banking. Please consider dropping off any of these at the headquarters at 125 Highland Avenue, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. If it's inconvenient for you to drop it off, send me an email and I'll pick it up from you. I'm back to let you know of the Obama campaign headquarter's wish list this week. We need gift cards to PaperMart, Giant Eagle and Trader Joe's. Also, if you have a paper shredder you don't want, we would love to have it. Again, I'd be glad to pick it up. Thanks so much.
