Anthony Coccia of "Anthony's Original Italian Ice" died a few months ago, so sadly this will be the first summer in a long time during which we won't see him near the park entrance with his Italian ice cart. Greetings, I just wanted to give everyone a "heads up" that you have a local community member that specializes in Computer ( PC ) Support and repairs and also has a "quick answer" help desk that is a local number, ( I'm on Winterton St. ... not in Asia ! ) for existing clients. My name is Steve Karl and I run and maintain the Pittsburgh PC Help Desk which can be found at: http://www.sightsea.com/pghpchd/ My "pet peeve" ::: New Computers that run very poorly because that "name brand company" put all that junk-ware in the machine. I've gotten really good at cleaning them up and making them perform well. Free Anti-Virus software that out performs the "2 big sellers" and is very "light weight" and easy on your PC. Initial phone consult is no charge, and most "quick calls" from existing clients are also no charge. Hardware repair / replacement also. [Highland Park] Services for Ollie Reiley

Dear Friends, Our good friend, great Highland Park neighbor, and long-time HPCC member and Newsletter editor Ollie Reiley died yesterday, after a long illness. We all, I know, from our various backgrounds and traditions of life and faith, remember him with many prayers and blessings, and with much affection--as we at the same time would encircle Betty and their children and wider family with love and care. Services will be Monday morning, October 2, at 10 a.m., at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, 5121 Westminster Place, Pittsburgh. I've been invited to be a part of the pastoral leadership of the service, and have been asked to say a few words in particular about Ollie's life and work and many friendships in the neighborhood. If you have any thoughts, reflections, memories, stories, etc., that you'd be willing to share with me by e-mail this weekend, that would be very nice. I'll try to include what I can in my remarks--and all will be passed along to the family, I know with their appreciation. Hi, Following up on the recent discussion of tree removal services: I got bids from 6 services and decided to go with the lowest bidder: Three Rivers Tree Service. They were great! This email is being sent on behalf of Jan Stayianos, Public Safety Chair, HPCC I want to pass a few things on to those of you who use the HPCC email. The saying "Things are not always what they seem" applies to a situation that happened in Highland PArk a while back. An email was sent that said a man was beaten with a baseball bat near Portland Street. According to police, this man (with an extensive arrest record) was probably up to monkey business. The fact that he came all the way from Bellevue to "run" in Highland Park was suspicious. The bat used was a plastic souvenir type of bat. Police suspect it was a drug deal gone bad. A few things that have happened to friends or neighbors since the Highland Park burglar was caught are as follows: • A friend's purse was stolen from her car, parked at the Super Playground, while her kids played for 45 minutes. Her car was locked. The thieves broke her car window. Before she could get through to PNC to cancel her credit card, a young girl had purchased $1,000 worth of VISA Gift Cards at the Center Ave. Giant Eagle with her stolen credit card. They went to another Giant Eagle and tried to spend the same amount again, but by then PNC had closed her account. The young woman was accompanied by a young man, according to surveillance tapes. • Neighbor's on Farragut St. were victimized by someone who broke into their house through a kitchen window while they we're sleeping. The thief took the woman's purse and then drove way in her car. • Another incident happened at the Waterworks Giant Eagle. A women's wallet was stolen from her purse, pick-pocket style (bumping, distracting, etc.), by two women. Things are still happening in Highland Park folks, so please be careful. Commander Dacey recently told me that people in Highland Park are still leaving their homes and cars unlocked! The Zone 5 Citizens Public Safety Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 13, at 7:00 PM at the Morningside VFW, 1820 Morningside Ave., two doors from Rite-Aid. The speakers will be District Magistrate/s (however many come). Commander Dacey will also make his report. These meetings are open to the public, and anyone is welcome to attend. It would be wonderful to see someone from Highland PArk every once in awhile! I am planning to invite Chief Dom Costa, Commander Maurita Bryant (Narcotics) and Commander Philip Dacey from Zone 5 to speak at the October HPCC meeting.
