[Highland Park] dogs roaming off leash

Hi, We have been having quite a problem with a large brown dog that roams our street (Wayne Road) off its leash. It's been messing on my yard, tearing up my gardens, and destroying our trash bags. We have no idea whose dog it is and it is unfriendly so we haven't approached it to see if there's a nametag. Is anyone familiar with this dog or know what (if anything) we can do about this? Are dogs allowed to run free in HP? Thanks, Sue

It's already the second week of May, so Thursday evening there will be a knitting get-together at Enrico's Tazza D'oro. In April, the first knitters arrived at 6:30 and the last ones left just before closing - so feel free to come and go at whatever time you can! We are not an exclusive group, so crocheters, cross-stitchers, etc. are welcome to join us, too. If you are interested, but the second Thursday of the month is a bad time, please send me an email and we'll consider another date if this doesn't work for many of you. Amy amers(a)att.net

Hello, everyone, I'd like to take a few minutes of your time to give you some updates on the Education InnovationsLAB Charter School. First remember that charter schools are: "independent public schools that are free to be more innovative and are held accountable for improved student achievement." A Quick Poll: Spanish or Chinese We're committed to providing a K-12 foreign language for all students. We haven't committed to any specific language. One school of thought would pick Spanish, since Latinos are the largest minority in the United States. Another school of thought would pick Chinese, since China is fast becoming an economic superpower. Our children can be prepared to communicate with either of these groups. So, we ask you: Spanish or Chinese? Please email us or call us with your thoughts. Of course, any language will require foreign travel as part of the curriculum. An Update On Thursday, May 4th, we resubmitted our application to the Pittsburgh Public School District to charter the Education InnovationsLAB Charter School. This resubmission included almost 75% enrollment; a majority of the teachers we need to start; a 250+ member petition urging the District to provide alternative public schools; and several partnerships. We thank State Representative Jake Wheatley and the East Liberty Chamber of Commerce for their support of the school. It is possible that we can start before Christmas, but more than likely will open early in 2007. We hope some of you who are advocates of independent, innovative public schools will join in our effort to bring a much needed alternative to current educational choices in Pittsburgh. When the Education InnovationsLAB Charter School opens, we feel it will be the best K-12 opportunity in Pittsburgh: 1. K-12 International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) school; 2. 6 Laboratories of Inquiry that center on strong workforce cluster is the region (technology, architecture/engineering, the arts, the science, languages, and economics); 3. nearly 1400 hours of LAB experience from 3rd grade through 6th grade; 4. nearly 5000 hours of a major LAB and 900 hours of a minor LAB from 7th grade to graduation; 5. K-12 entrepreneurship curriculum required for all students regardless of major; 6. K-12 foreign language required for all students regardless of major. To achieve world class status, we support each child: 1. Certified teacher and teaching assistant in every classroom of no more than 20 students; and an administrative assistant that supports every 3 to 4 classrooms; 2. An in-house full-service tutoring center for students needing daily support; 3. A web-based core curriculum and real-time updates on your child's progress (time on computer only accounts for about 40% of a child's time in the core curriculum); 4. LABs that apply core curriculum skills through hands-on projects that take students into the community on a regular basis; 5. High-tech classrooms that feature interactive SMART Boards, at least 10 computers per class, but also include an age-appropriate literature and resource library with at least 200 titles; 6. A K-12 savings program tied to student fundraising and matched by local sources; and 7. An environment infused with inquiry and innovation. It's not too late to enroll your children. The deadline for applications is June 30. Students must be 5 years of age by December 31 of the current year to be accepted into Kindergarten. FYI: * Kindergarten is 45% enrolled; * First Grade is 90% enrolled; * Second Grade is 75 % enrolled; * Third Grade is 50% enrolled; * Fourth Grade is 50% enrolled; * Fifth Grade is 45% enrolled; * Sixth Grade is 40% enrolled; There are no requirements for entrance. Any grade that is oversubscribed will hold a lottery for admission. Contact us to tour the proposed site or to ask specific questions about our program.
