Union Project Update - www.unionproject.org - Volunteers Needed 12 volunteers are needed to help clean stained glass windows as part of our stained glass restoration classes and to assist with putting together a mailing. Volunteer help is needed this Thursday, June 9, from 7-9 pm. No previous experience is necessary. Volunteers will also be needed on July 9, July 16 and July 23 to assist with gardening between 10 am and 2 pm. Magic Penny Garden request for plants and volunteers Persephone Project founder/director and UP resident artist Stephanie Flom is creating a Magic Penny Garden, a public artwork on the corner of Stanton and Negley Avenues. The garden is being designed by Stephanie along with ten community collaborators and will be comprised of plants shared by community members. The shared plants are those that have been given to the gardener and hold special meaning because of the significance of the narrative they hold. Please bring a perennial plant from your garden to the Union Project on Sunday, June 26 between 1 and 4 pm to help create the Magic Penny Garden. Join Stephanie and other community volunteers on three Saturdays in July from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help plant the garden. The Persephone Project is a community conceptual art project that promotes gardening as contemporary art and recognizes gardeners as artists. Calling all Coffee Addicts/Lovers The Union Station has a surplus of Pura Vida Coffee on hand - 35 lbs to be exact- and we are looking for people to purchase it from us! This is notjust good coffee, but GREAT COFFEE with a GREAT CAUSE! Call for local potters Union Project is requesting support from local ceramic artists in making Union Station Café a vibrant and successful coffee shop and to reflect the value of community support even in the dinnerware that is used to serve our customers. If you are a ceramic artist and would consider contributing 10 handmade ceramic mugs or cups for us to use in Union Station your in-kind contribution of dinnerware to the Union Project is fully tax-deductible. We plan to use your gift of functional ceramic art in Union Station. Customers will eat and drink out of your pieces on a daily basis. Additionally, customers will have the opportunity to purchase the dinnerware they are eating off of (or similar clean pieces). Glass Restoration and Team Building @ Union Project Do you want to build relationships with your co-workers, staff, or employees? Union Project is expanding its revolutionary stained glass restoration classes to the broader Pittsburgh business community. We would like to work with your business or organization to provide a valuable service in relationship and team building, while at the same time promoting volunteerism and service to the community. Union Project will host your group of between 4 and 12 individuals for half-day, full-day, or weekend long workshops concentrating on team building and the importance of good working relationships. Your group will assist in and/or complete the full restoration of a historic stained glass window that will be permanently reinstalled into the Union Project. Union Project staff skilled in leadership initiatives will lead the team building portion of the classes. Catherine Berard of Prism Stained Glass is the primary instructor for stained glass portion of the classes. Cost for each workshop is determined by the number of participants in each workshop. Now accepting applications for rental partners Union Project is now accepting rental applications for use of studio, office, venue, and board meeting spaces at the Union Project. Rental agreements can begin as early as September 1, 2005. Union Project has 8 unique office and studio spaces available for rent. In addition, there are 3 separate common areas that are available for use as worship space, performance space, board meeting space, weddings, and other civic gathering opportunities. Call for Weekly Volunteers Union Project is in need of several dedicated volunteers to spend a few hours each week at Storehouse, a Pittsburgh organization that redistributes abundance to local non –profits. Union Project representatives must volunteer approximately 12 hours per month in the warehouse doing jobs such as sorting, packaging, arranging, labeling, loading, and unloading, phone answering, paperwork, cleaning and building maintenance. [Highland Park] Cat found on Heberton

I found a black cat with a purple collar across the street from 842 Heberton. She looks like she is possibly less than a year old and is very friendly. Since she had a collar on, she had to belong to someone in the area and maybe she just got lost. I would take her but I have 2 "special needs" cats. She is VERY cute and sweet!! I took her to the Animal Rescue League and she is not microchipped or spayed. On a side note, we did run into a dog when we were there and she seemed to be not afraid of him. I'd like to thank the organizers and volunteers of the yard sale for bringing us such a wonderful event. I know that Kelly Vitti was at the center of the storm, but my thanks go out to everyone involved. As was the case last year, we got to meet several neighbors that we wouldn't have met otherwise. Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts & Humanities will be holding the second bi-annual "Reflections of Childhood" auction next school season. Outside my garage in the alley (Etude Way) between Callery and Jackson (1/2 block west of Heberton are a number of computer parts, etc. that may be of interest to a hobbyist. 1) Mustek legal size scanner works on parallel port. Slow, but will scan up to 12 x 14 inches. 2) Computer case with powersupply 3) Bag full of keyboard / monitor /data switches, etc. 4) Xerox personal copier - needs cartridge but worked a few years ago 5) Large tower case with P6-200 motherboard, scsi disk and controller. No OS. Vintage 1995 or so 6) Large tower case with P-133 motherboard and IDE disk. AIT all in wonder video card Vintage 1995 or so. Case originally held 386 machine and has large capacity and several fans. No OS. Take them before the trash men get them. In addition, I have some vintage (60s-70s) loudspeakers in questionable condition. 2 Pr AR-3 A 1 Pr Full size Advent (slightly larger than AR3) 1 Electrovoice Georgian (5' high, 18"woofer, horn midrange and tweeter) Blonde wood cabinet. Not used in some years. Make offer(s) and take away, if we can agree. The last Georgian I saw on the net had an asking price of several thousand, but I'll take much, much, much less. [Highland Park] Charter School Planning Meeting this Tuesday

Education Innovations, Inc. will host a charter school planning meeting on Tuesday June 7, 2005. We will be working through mission, vision, and core value questions. Further, we will be setting goals and benchmarks as we work towards a submittal of a charter application to the Pittsburgh School Board by the end of October. Anyone interested in helping with the process is welcome to join us. Charter Schools are public schools and open to any child in the school district. So, please feel free to forward this message to other lists. Further, we will convene several focus groups in the coming months to answer key questions about our model. If you would be interested in participating in a focus group, send us an email. Further, we will convene a forum to discuss science education and the school's role in preparing students for citizenship. If you a professional with expertise in these areas and would like to be a panelist, let us know. We understand that not everyone supports charter schools. The great Highland Park Yard Sale takes place today. Visit one of the following locations between 9:00 am and noon to get a list of sales and a map: Bunkerhill Street at North Saint Claire Street North Highland Avenue at Stanton Avenue North Negley Avenue at Hampton Street Yesterday while I was at Food Glorious Food's Saturday bakery, Chef Tom Hambor told me they would be open again today, so if you missed the bakery yesterday you should definitely check it out today! Every Tuesday there is a neighborhood walk starting at Enrico's at 7:30 pm. This is a dog- and kid-friendly walk. This Wednesday there will be a meeting of the Highland Park History group at the fountain at 7:30 pm. We will discuss the history of the fountain, the way previous fountain and garden designs figured into the current design, will hear a personal history of the area, and of course anyone else is welcome to talk about their own experiences. If you're coming, please reply to me to let me know. Every Thursday during the summer the Union Project at the corner of North Highland Avenue at Stanton Avenue holds its summer market with local produce available and even activities for kids. I used to send out a summary of events each week but it was too much work for me to do alone. If anyone would like to help bring it back, please reply to me to let me know. Rudy
