[Highland Park] porch repair

Hi Highland Park, I am seeking a carpenter who can repair the fascia on a large corner of my back porch roof. Can anyone recommend someone? I've contacted the people in the tradesperson's list and got no answers to voicemail, etc. Maybe the job's too small... Also, I could use some advice on whether/how to make the parties responsible for the damage to my porch roof accountable. A certain utilities company had a low-hanging drop wire attached to my porch roof, and a trucking company snagged it, resulting in the new, very visible "low-rent-look" to my home. The insurance company threw me less than a hundred bucks for the damage. So to sum up, can anyone help with: 1. carpenter recommendation, and/or 2. advice on handling property damage issues? [Highland Park] Family Literacy Wish List

Dear Highland Park Neighbors, I work with 25 English as a Second Language refugee families living in Lawrenceville in a Family Literacy program (adult education, parent education, parent and child interactive activities, and early childhood education) through Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. We collaborate with Pittsburgh Public Schools, Carnegie Libraries, Beginning with Books, America Reads, Literacy AmeriCorps, and Tania Grubbs (music educator). We are fortunate to be opening our own site for the families in August. At this point we can afford the basics to setup our classroom. But to make this a comfortable learning environment for the whole family I am seeking donations of specific items. GPLC is a non-profit agency, so donation receipts are available. On June 9, Edith Bell wrote: On Sunday morning about 10 car windows were smashed --rather shot at with bibi-guns --at Bunkerhill St. and Melon St. all around the hi-rise. As far as I know nothing was taken. They shot at the third window on driver's side of my car, which does not open nor is it in a door, so there was no aim at getting in, just vandalism. The same thing happened at the other end of the neighborhood last night (approximately 2am on june 29), on Heberton and Hampton Streets. I also heard that Bryant Street suffered the same fate, but didn't verify it. The vandals shot not only windows, but also the car bodies this time. I heard the car speeding away, but couldn't catch not even a glimpse of it. :-( I wonder if a camera pointing at the street to record such activity is feasible and legal. dm

[Highland Park] Mellon Street requesting HELP!

Dear Highland Park: For the past few months, there has been a group of young black men hanging out at 917/919 Mellon Street, guests of a young woman who lives there. She didn't pay rent for a couple months, and we were told that she was being evicted, but when she didn't leave, the landlord told us that she paid in cash, so he COULDN'T kick her out. Now he claims he is still trying to get her out. These men have been selling drugs (2 heroin arrests) and many of them have guns (at least 3 gun arrests, and a couple guns found). They are a large group, and very intimidating, even for those of us who have been around for several years. Tonight, I went out to my car to get something and was stared down by them, one of them flashed me his gun. About 1/2 hour later a car pulled up and 2 undercover agents got out. This guy dropped his gun and ran...the cops are still out looking for him. I feel like an idiot still living here and still complaining about it. Zone 5 has been very helpful in the last couple months, but they can only do so much. I know it's a lot to ask for neighbors to put themselves in harms way, but I'm here! I know the community is aware of these problems, and I am putting out a final plea for help! We have seen several neighbors leave and give up their homes. We don't want to do the same thing. If anyone is willing to help but doing a standing-around-on-the-corner-to-discourage-bad-activity campaign, I'll make ice tea! Also, if anyone knows of a lawyer who could help initiate something against the landlords who prefer drug money to being a good neighbor, please have them contact me. Thanks again...
