Hi Folks, Taj Mahal business is really slow still. If you like Indian food, this is one of the best Indian restaurants in Pittsburgh. When ownership changed from Sitar to Taj Mahal the food was not that good. I was very disappointed. However, now that the transition phase is over, their food is excellent. The cooks are the same cooks that work at the North Hills Taj Mahal which has been voted Best Indian restaurant for multiple years. The owners are really nice as well. Get to know them. I'd hate to see one of our newest businesses get discouraged and close down. I think it is a privilege to have a great restaurant within walking distance. I have just been cheated by a handiman who asked for partial payment for a job and then never came back to finish the work. I understand that he has done this to at least two other people in our Highland Park neighborhood. Be on the lookout for an African American man named Leroy Ramsey. He is tall and "specializes" in concrete work altho he says he can fix almost anything. I have learned an expensive lession! -- Margaret O'Connell

This Saturday, February 12, 7 p.m., in Brooks Hall of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 5801 Hampton Street, Highland Park, a free presentation of the 1949 classic film, "All the King's Men." All are welcome. We are invited to bring a snack to share . . . . <<-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All the King's Men (1949) is the fictionalized account of the rise and fall of a backwoods rebel - a story inspired by the rule (and abuse of power) of Louisiana's colorful state governor (1928-32) and Democratic U.S. Senator (1932-35), notorious Huey Pierce Long - "The Kingfish." It is a melodramatic story of the corruption of power by an ambitious demagogue, adapted and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning and best-selling 1946 novel of the same name by Robert Penn Warren, and filmed from a script by producer/screenwriter/director Robert Rossen (known for directing other films such as Body and Soul (1947) and The Hustler (1961)). The main difference between the novel and the film is the reversal of the major roles: the narrating newspaper reporter takes precedence over the power-hungry governor in the novel. In the film, the secondary character is the reporter, while the central character is lawyer-turned-politician Willie Stark. One of the film's posters proclaimed: "He thought he had the world by the tail...till it exploded in his face...with a bullet attached..." The great political film was a breakthrough film for Broderick Crawford from his B picture status - his performance is very compelling and impressive as he is transformed from a backwoods, honest and naive lawyer into a dirty, unscrupulous and sleazy politician. Of the film's seven Academy Awards nominations, it won three major honors: Crawford won the Best Actor statuette, Rossen (as producer) won the Best Picture Oscar, and Best Supporting Actress went to Mercedes McCambridge (in her screen debut). Its other nominations were: Best Supporting Actor (John Ireland), Best Director and Best Screenplay (both for Rossen), and Best Film Editing.>>

It happened to me also, but it was a much less costly mistake -- several years ago I gave this person cash to shovel my sidewalk and driveway, almost immediately he said he had to leave to take care of his son and would return shortly. But he never did. I felt sorry for him too. It seems he is part of our community, but scamming is a sad way to make a living. [Highland Park] Concert by HP resident/PSO player mixes music and visual art

Highland Park resident and Pittsburgh Symphony bassoonist David Sogg would like you to come to a chamber music concert at The Warhol on Monday, February 21, at 7:30 pm. "Sonic Canvases: Pictures for a Composition" features music inspired by visual art and artists and includes the world premiere of "Andy Warhol Sez:" by 2004 Pulitzer Prize winning composer Paul Moravec. The music crosses three centuries, and the artworks date from 2700 BC to the era following the Tiananmen Square massacre. Slides of the artworks will be shown, and a reception with the performers, Mr. Moravec, and composer Susan Kander will follow the concert. (Ms. Kander was recently received recognition on public radio for a youth opera she wrote, "One False Move," on the topic of bullying among teenage girls.) Here's some important news for park users... There's a hearing tomorrow concerning a bill that would allow certain kinds of advertising in our parks. This text comes from a message that was forwarded to me; I've whittled it down for brevity. -Rudy City Council Hearing: Advertising in City Parks 1:30 pm, Wednesday, February 9 City Council Chambers (414 Grant Street, 5th Floor). Councilman Motznik has proposed a change to the Pittsburgh zoning code (Bill No. 386) that would allow advertising from sponsors to be posted in parks and recreation areas. Signs up to 4' x 8' would be permissible on buildings, structures, or fences. The proposal is intended to generate funds for the city. Due to an overwhelming amount of testimony against the ordinance, the Planning Commission voted unanimously in opposition to the proposal, even with changes that sought to improve it. The bill now moves to Council with its original wording - with minimal restrictions in place. The bill will require seven (out of nine) Council votes to pass (a super-majority of Council is needed to override this recommendation from the Planning Commission). The registration deadline for April classes is April 1. Saturday morning classes and Thursday evening classes are being offered. Also, new in April, will be our weekend stained glass intensive. Class members will work from Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon to completely restore their windows. Lunch will be included on 2 days, and a smaller class will all for more student/teacher interaction. Class members will see the fruits of their labor almost instantly. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead’s words are serving as the basis for a conference sponsored by Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania and six other organizations, including the Union Project, which is expected to attract 1,000 attendees. “Nonprofits as Agents of Change: Leading Our Region’s Next Renaissance” is the theme of the 2005 Nonprofit Summit, which will be held on April 26 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. The conference will focus on leadership, change and transformation. It will feature two concurrent sessions that include 13 workshops on all aspects of change – planning, leading, crafting, facilitating, raising money for, advocating for, marketing for and more.
