FYI: The new police recruits will be utilizing the Police Firing Range on Friday, February 25, 2005 from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm for the purposes of night firing. Just wanted everyone to be aware so that they aren't alarmed by the sounds of rapid gun fire. Sorry for the inconvenience that it may cause, but the training is absolutely necessary. RaShall M. [Highland Park] POLICE ACTIVITY REQUESTED

Here's one for you. As everyone knows, the 800 and 900 blocks of Mellon Street are havens for drug dealers, thugs and generally bad characters. I live at 922 Mellon Street. On Tuesday, when the weather was beautiful, I came home to a flurry of activity: Drug dealing right out in front of my house, people sitting on the porches of abandoned properties drinking beer and breaking bottles, thumping radios, etc. Yesterday two members of the democratic committee were meeting me at my house to attend a dinner and as they walked by 924 Mellon Street, they were asked if they wanted to "buy any reefer?" The dealers don't even live there! In the 800 block, dealers are actually dropped off in the morning to "do business" and they leave at night. And very few people see this because half the properties on the 800 block are owned (and have been for years) by the Highland Park CDC and have yet to be developed into livable spaces! WHY CAN'T SOMETHING BE DONE? Please explain to me? My husband and I have been fighting the good fight for 6 years, we've seen our supporting neighbors sell to slumlords because they couldn't stand it any longer. We need GOOD NEIGHBORS, NO BEER SALES, AND POLICE INTERVENTION TO GET RID OF THE DRUG DEALERS in order to fix things. That sounds like a pretty reasonable time to be conducting such training, specifically if it's important to be done at night. In any case, it would probably be comforting to many to have advance warning. [Highland Park] HPCC Meeting Thursday 2/17/05

Hello All The Highland Park Community Club meeting this Thursday is going to feature an update on all the projects going on in the Park. We will be hearing about the Babbling Brook, the Welcome Entry Fountain and Garden, and Heth's Run. We will also find out what is going on with the Reservoir, which includes the promenade and slopes. This is what I am looking forward to hearing about the most, since I hear there are major changes planned. This is an exciting time in our Park, and there is a lot of activity going on to make it the best park in the City. You should plan on attending this meeting, as a lot will be discussed about the Park, and you will want to know all about it. The meeting will be at St Andrews Church, 5701 Hampton Street, starting at 7:30 pm. All are welcome to listen and comment on the restoration of Highland Park. See you Thursday. Bob Staresinic

[Highland Park] Request on behalf of Dilworth

Hi all - I'm a Highland Park resident and the parent of a second grader at Dilworth. I've started an initiative at the school to provide creative alternatives for indoor recess (the "default" activity in the PGH public school system, apparently, is to show the kids Disney movies in the auditorium...) In any case, I've been helped by an able group of parents, and we've been doing games and crafts with the kids. By all accounts, it's been a great success. Here's where I need your help. I would be interested in purchasing/receiving as a donation board games in good condition (appropriate for the 5-10 set), assorted Lego pieces, and Lincoln Logs from area residents.
