This is not a contractor recommendation, but a tip I got from our handyman. If what you are getting is water seeping in at the corners, it's probably coming from you roof drains. You may want to have the in-ground pipes carrying off your roof water reamed out. Also, check and see if there is "air space" around the tile pipe carrying roof drain water down to the storm water line. If there is, fill the empty space with packed soil--that open space around the tile serves as a conduit for rain water to run down and "pile up" against your basement wall. [Highland Park] Community Festival: need volunteers !

Hi all, The festival is upon us (this Saturday, August 14, 5 - 9 PM) and we need volunteers, especially young people, for the following tasks: - set-up of chairs/tables - staffing children's games - knock-down tables/chairs Set-up will start about 3 PM Saturday afternoon, and knock-down will start at 9 PM or a little earlier. I can't offer any pay, but Gramma Lena's pizzeria on Bryant St. has agreed to make a few pizzas for volunteers. Friends and Neighbors- With some sadness we are bidding Highland Park (and Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania) a farewell- we are relocating to Bangor, ME (yes, we like winter). [Highland Park] History Group forming

Quarterly meetings of the newly-forming Highland Park History Group will begin sometime in the fall--probably in November. Anyone interested in the history of Highland Park, East Liberty, and the East End of Pittsburgh is welcome to participate. We expect to share stories, photos, old postcards, and newspaper clippings, in order to learn more about the history of our area. Please reply if you're interested. Anyway, I hope that folks across the neighborhood were able to have block parties and meet their neighbors. If anyone would like to help coordinate National Night Out next year, I suggest that you become involved with the Highland Park Community Club. The next meeting of the HPCC is next Thursday at 7:30 pm at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Hampton St. Everyone in the neighborhood is welcome to join the HPCC and participate in HPCC activities. The more people we have volunteering their time in the HPCC, the more quality events and representation we will have in the neighborhood. We're looking to fill several leadership positions. If you're interested, see us Saturday at the Community Festival on Bryant Street or come to the HPCC meeting next Thursday. Rudy

[Highland Park] Newly remodeled apartments

Neighbors: We are close to finishing what has become a major rehab project at 5552 Avondale Place. We have completely gutted the interior of the building and redone all the mechanicals (plus anything else that got in the way) as we have created three luxury style apartments. We will have two completely new units available August 15th, and could use your help in renting them. One apartment is a 1 BR which rents for $600/month + utilities. It has cherry hardwood floors, tons of recessed lighting (and natural light), an open and spacious kitchen, loads of ceramic tile in the bathroom, and a large bedroom with plenty of closet space. The other unit is a 2 BR, renting for $850/month plus utilities. This apartment has a very large eat-in kitchen with tons of cabinets, a nice bathroom with new everything, two very spacious bedrooms with lots of natural light in one. [Highland Park] Young Writer's Workshop

Our Young Entrepreneur's Club was filled to capacity with 10 children. The group decided to start an online magazine that caters to children. Monkeymag.com The Magazine 4 Kidz will feature youth written movie, book, and video game reviews; advice column; crafts; news interpreted for youth; and volunteer opportunities by zip code. Look for these motivated youths to present their business plan at the next community club meeting. The Young Writer's Workshop starts this coming Monday. We still have some space available. Highland Park's own Paula Flaherty will be teaching the art portion of the club. The club meets Monday through Friday from 9:00AM through 12:00PM for two weeks.
