[Highland Park] host families for international students

Attention to the Highland Park Community: CIEE, the Council on International Educational Exchange, a non-profit, non-governmental organization known as a global leader in international education and exchanges since its start in 1947, is looking to place 5 more international high school students into homes in Pittsburgh for this fall school year. These students are from Brazil, Thailand, Russia, the Ukraine, and Japan. A few students from China may be arriving in a few weeks also to attend high school in the Unites States for one year. I am reaching out to community members that may be interested in being a host familiy for the academic school year. Host responsibilities include providing three meals a day to a student, as well as a bed of their own. Students can share a room with other household members. All families are welcome to inquire, as well as single people, provided that they house a same sex student. Students visiting the United States through CIEE are looking to develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. I traveled through CIEE while in college and would like to do what I can to get invovled these last few weeks as time is of the essence. [Highland Park] NatureLAB Build Day in Uptown

Volunteer @ Education Innovations, Inc. AHRCO (the Allegheny Housing and Rehabilitation Corporation), a manager of low-income housing, has donated 26,000 square feet of space in Uptown for us to use for NatureLAB. Thanks, AHRCO! Our goal is to build a working greenhouse, a 20-foot diameter (portable) geodesic dome classroom, a performance venue, and working mini-farm where children learn about science and life processes. This space will be our main NatureLAB site. It will complement our NatureLAB garden behind Food Glorious Food. We are getting started with the site this coming Saturday and hope that you can help. See below for our NatureLAB build day opportunity this coming Saturday. Bring tools and plants to share. We know this is late in the season, but we'll take any plants, even if they can only be enjoyed for another month. We'll provide water and pizza. [Highland Park] Jeff Grubbs Trio at Reservoir of Jazz on Sunday, August 22nd

A little background about the JEFF GRUBBS TRIO... Jeff is classical and jazz musician and a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Bass Section. He is going on his 9th season with this prchestra. As a Jazz musician he has played with many well-known musicians as Joe Williams, Joe Lovano, Mel Lewis, Kenny Burrell, Diane Schur, & Nat Adderly. Jeff will be using Pianist Alton Merrell, who is on the piano faculty at Youngstown State University and is a amazing composer and arranger. On drums will be James Johnson III. James and Jeff have been playing together for 3 years now and when they met they had an instant connection. James teaches at the African-American Music Institute in Homewood, which is run by his parents. He is a graduate of CAPA High School and has toured with Pittsburgh native Ahmad Jamal and many others. Together these three musician create a sound that is to be heard. On Sunday the last concert of the ROJ the trio will be playing many originals and jazz standards. They will be playing at the Cleveland Bop Stop on Saturday Aug. 21st as well. Last week we had over 750 people attend the ROJ and we hope to see more next week... Tania Grubbs
